GRSE’s 79th Independence Day: Commitment to Indigenous Defence and Eco-Friendly Shipbuilding
Indian Masterminds Stories

New Delhi: Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE), a premier defence public sector undertaking, commemorated the 79th Independence Day with patriotic enthusiasm at its Kolkata facilities. The occasion underscored GRSE’s unwavering commitment to self-reliance in defence production and a strategic expansion into green maritime technologies.

Flag Hoisting and Ceremonial Guard of Honour

The celebrations commenced with the national flag unfurling by Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) Cmde PR Hari, IN (Retd.), who also inspected a ceremonial guard of honour presented by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). Senior management, including Director (Shipbuilding) Cdr Shantanu Bose, IN (Retd.), Director (Corporate Planning & Personnel) Capt (IN) P Sunilkumar (Retd.), CVO Abhishek Ranjan, and CISF officials attended the event.

CMD Cmde Hari’s Address: Emphasizing Atmanirbharta and Innovation

In his address, Cmde Hari praised the CISF for its vital role in securing GRSE’s sensitive facilities. He reinforced the shipyard’s dedication to Atmanirbharta (self-reliance) and innovation, particularly highlighting the significance of indigenous technologies in national defence.

Referring to “Operation Sindoor” — an emblematic effort showcasing India’s self-sufficiency — Cmde Hari stated:

“There can be no substitute for home-grown technologies in safeguarding our sovereignty.”

Robust Order Book and Green Shipbuilding Initiatives

Highlighting the shipyard’s strong workload, Cmde Hari revealed that GRSE currently has 40 vessels under construction, including:

  • 14 warships for the Indian Navy
  • 9 export vessels
  • 17 domestic commercial vessels

The projects encompass a wide spectrum of maritime platforms, ranging from advanced naval warships to zero-emission and hybrid-propulsion commercial vessels, reflecting GRSE’s commitment to environmentally sustainable shipbuilding.

Cmde Hari remarked:

The coming years will see GRSE delivering several warships while expanding its commercial vessel portfolio and extending our expertise in eco-friendly platforms.”

GRSE’s Vision for a Sustainable Maritime Future

By integrating cutting-edge green technologies with robust defence manufacturing, GRSE aims to align its growth trajectory with India’s broader goals for sustainability and strategic autonomy in defence capabilities. The shipyard’s increasing focus on hybrid propulsion systems and zero-emission vessels marks a significant stride toward reducing the maritime sector’s environmental footprint.

GRSE’s Independence Day celebrations thus not only honoured India’s freedom but also reinforced the shipyard’s pivotal role in shaping the future of Indian maritime defence and green technology innovation.
