Lucknow: In a landmark healthcare initiative, the Government of Uttar Pradesh under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced the establishment of 100-bed cancer hospitals in every district of the state. The ambitious move aims to strengthen cancer care infrastructure and protect patients from the burden of expensive treatment.
The project will be implemented in phases, focusing on tertiary, secondary, and day-care cancer treatment facilities across Uttar Pradesh.
Tertiary Cancer Care Centres in All 18 Divisions
In the first phase, the government will establish tertiary cancer care centres in all 18 divisions of Uttar Pradesh. The Kalyan Singh Super Speciality Cancer Institute in Lucknow will serve as the nodal agency for this initiative.
The government plans to upgrade oncology units in existing government medical colleges to develop these centres. This strategy will help reduce infrastructure costs and ensure that multiple investigations and diagnostic services are available under one roof.
In divisions without government medical colleges, new cancer super-speciality centres will be constructed.
100-Bed Secondary Cancer Hospitals in Every District
In the second phase, 100-bed secondary cancer care hospitals will be built in all districts. These hospitals will provide:
- Radiotherapy
- Chemotherapy
- General cancer surgeries
Additionally, district hospitals will include four-bed cancer day-care centres to provide short-term treatment services.
Advanced Cancer Treatment Facilities
The upcoming cancer centres will be equipped with advanced medical technologies, including:
- Linear accelerators for precision radiotherapy
- PET scan facilities
- CyberKnife technology
- Immunotherapy
- Molecular medicine
- Genetic coding and diagnostics
These facilities aim to provide affordable and high-quality cancer treatment within the state, reducing the need for patients to travel outside Uttar Pradesh.
Expert Committee Formed to Guide the Project
To oversee the establishment of cancer hospitals, the state government has formed a high-level expert committee. The committee includes specialists from leading medical institutions such as:
- Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI)
- King George’s Medical University (KGMU)
- Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences
Key members of the committee include:
- Dr. MLB Bhatt, Director, Kalyan Singh Cancer Institute
- Dr. Saksham, Medical Oncologist
- Dr. Shaleen Kumar, Radiation Oncologist
- Prof. Dr. Vijay Kumar, Surgical Oncologist
- Dr. RS Yadav, GM, National Health Mission
- Dr. Neetu Shukla, DGM
- Dr. Alka Sharma, State Nodal Officer
The hospitals will be developed based on a viability gap analysis under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
Research Team to Identify Regional Cancer Patterns
The government has also formed a dedicated research team to study cancer trends in different regions of the state.
According to Dr. MSB Bhatt:
- Oral cancer is more prevalent in districts like Mainpuri and Kanpur.
- Gallbladder cancer cases are rising rapidly in the Gangetic plains region.
This research will help tailor cancer treatment facilities according to regional needs.
Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak’s Statement
Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister Brajesh Pathak stated that a cancer super-speciality centre will be established in each division. Since Lucknow and Kanpur already have multiple advanced medical institutions, the government will expand services to other underserved districts.
A Major Step Towards Affordable Cancer Care
With this initiative, Uttar Pradesh aims to significantly improve cancer diagnosis and treatment infrastructure. The project is expected to reduce treatment costs, improve early detection, and make advanced cancer care accessible across urban and rural areas.
