Lucknow: In a major move to address the rising number of road accidents, the Yogi Government in Uttar Pradesh has announced the launch of ‘Zero Fatality Month’ across the state from 1st to 31st January 2026. The initiative, led jointly by the Transport and Police Departments, aims to ensure that not a single life is lost in road accidents during the month.

High-Risk Corridors Identified

As part of the initiative, authorities have identified 363 high-risk corridors across the state, which will be the primary focus areas for road safety enforcement. Campaigns such as ‘No Helmet, No Fuel’ will be conducted rigorously to ensure compliance with traffic rules. Other departments will also participate in raising awareness and supporting safety measures. Officials believe that the results of these measures will become visible by the end of January 2026, potentially serving as a model for accident reduction nationwide.

Key Departments and Stakeholders Involved

The campaign will see the involvement of multiple departments, including Public Works, Health, Education, Panchayati Raj, and Information. Under the Zero Fatality District Plan, 233 critical police station areas across 20 districts have been identified for intensive monitoring to curb road accidents.

Authorities have also issued detailed guidelines targeting:

  • Drunk driving
  • Over-speeding
  • Lane violations
  • Wrong-way driving
  • Not wearing helmets or seat belts
  • Non-compliance with reflector tape and fog lights
  • Vehicles operating without permits or fitness certification

Road Safety Measures and Awareness Campaigns

The government has prioritized infrastructure improvements at 1,484 identified black spots, including road markings, signage, and crash barriers. The Health Department will strengthen emergency response protocols, increase the number of ALS-equipped ambulances, and bolster trauma care centers.

The Panchayati Raj Department will conduct awareness meetings in every gram panchayat, while schools will engage students through painting, speech, and drama competitions to promote road safety awareness among children.

Objective and Expected Outcomes

Through these coordinated efforts, Uttar Pradesh aims to drastically reduce road accident fatalities, making the state a model for road safety initiatives. The campaign represents a multi-departmental approach combining enforcement, infrastructure development, and public awareness to save lives and improve road safety across the state.
