In a visionary move to enhance connectivity, strengthen national security, and boost tourism, the Uttarakhand government has initiated a comprehensive plan to develop and expand helipads in the state’s border and mountainous regions. With strategic support from the Indian Army, this project is expected to begin early next year and proceed in a phased manner.
Given its geographical importance—sharing borders with both China and Nepal—Uttarakhand’s border regions play a critical role in national defense. The expansion of helipads in these areas is a crucial infrastructure initiative with both civilian and military utility.
Dual-Purpose Infrastructure: Security and Disaster Response
The proposed helipads are designed to serve multiple functions:
- Support for military operations in remote border regions
- Rapid response during natural disasters, including rescue and relief missions
- Enhanced access to remote villages and towns, improving logistics and mobility
Tourism Secretary Mr. Sachin Kurve (2003-batch IAS officer) emphasized that these helipads are not only vital for national security but also have the potential to transform the economic landscape of remote areas by fostering connectivity and employment.
Promoting Tourism Through Air Connectivity
The government is actively working to develop new tourist destinations in remote parts of Uttarakhand. Helicopter connectivity will play a crucial role in opening up these areas to both domestic and international tourists.
Currently, the state has identified:
- 102 government helipad sites
- 31 private helipad sites
These helipads are already being used on a need basis. Now, the government plans to expand and operationalize them systematically, in collaboration with the military and private operators.
District-Wise Government Helipad Count
The following districts have helipads identified for phased development:
- Pithoragarh – 16
- Uttarkashi – 14
- Almora – 11
- Chamoli – 11
- Dehradun – 07
- Nainital – 07
- Pauri – 07
- Tehri – 07
- Udham Singh Nagar – 07
- Bageshwar – 05
- Rudraprayag – 05
- Champawat – 03
- Haridwar – 02
This helipad network will significantly improve transportation across Uttarakhand’s hilly terrain, enabling both security forces and civilians to reach remote areas more efficiently.
Employment and Economic Opportunities for Locals
One of the key goals of the project is to create local employment through:
- Construction and maintenance of helipads
- Tourism-related services
- Helicopter operations and logistics
By integrating infrastructure development with tourism promotion, the state government aims to position Uttarakhand’s remote regions on the national and global tourism map.
The initiative reflects a balanced approach to strategic defense needs and sustainable development, reinforcing Uttarakhand’s position as a progressive, secure, and tourist-friendly state.
