New Delhi: With the Vice Presidential elections inching closer, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is witnessing a whirlwind of speculation over who will be its nominee for the prestigious constitutional post. Among the over a dozen names being floated, the mention of Sheshadri Ramanujan Chari, a veteran RSS ideologue and former editor of Organizer, has surprised many political watchers and insiders alike.
Chari’s name has emerged as a dark horse in the race, reportedly backed by the RSS leadership owing to his Tamil origin, clean image, and longstanding association with the Sangh Parivar. However, insiders question whether such a move would yield any political dividend, especially in Tamil Nadu—where past efforts to woo the electorate through symbolic appointments have largely failed to convert into electoral gains for the BJP.
Tamil Nadu Names in Focus: Chari, Radhakrishnan, R.N. Ravi
Chari is not the only Tamil name being considered. Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan, a senior BJP leader with roots in Tamil Nadu, and R.N. Ravi, the current Governor of Tamil Nadu and a former IPS officer, are also in contention. Both bring a mix of bureaucratic acumen, regional familiarity, and proximity to the current establishment.
Yet, as per internal BJP assessments, symbolic representation alone may not suffice to make inroads in a politically resistant state like Tamil Nadu. “The BJP still has a long road ahead before it becomes electorally relevant in Tamil Nadu,” a senior party functionary admitted off the record.
Other High-Profile Names: From Nirmala Sitharaman to D.Y. Chandrachud
The list of potential candidates doesn’t stop there. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and philanthropist and Rajya Sabha MP Sudha Murty are being discussed as options that combine credibility, clean image, and national appeal.
In a broader outreach, names like Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and former Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud are also said to be in serious discussion. Chandrachud’s name, while unexpected, would signal a strong institutional pivot by the ruling alliance—though it’s unclear whether he would entertain such a political transition.
Wildcards and Strategic Picks: Shashi Tharoor, JP Nadda, Manoj Sinha
Interestingly, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor—a known orator and global face—has also entered the speculation list, although it’s uncertain whether the opposition would consider supporting him or if he would accept a consensus-backed nomination.
From within the BJP’s own ranks, party president J.P. Nadda, Delhi LG Vinai Kumar Saxena, veteran journalist Ram Bahadur Rai, and J&K LG Manoj Sinha are seen as strong internal contenders. Each offers a different political narrative—organizational loyalty, bureaucratic expertise, media credibility, or governance record.
Political Calculations Beyond Optics
The Vice Presidential election, while largely symbolic, offers a glimpse into the strategic priorities of the ruling alliance. Whether the NDA seeks to make a regional statement, a gender-forward choice, or project institutional integrity, the final decision will be a reflection of its 2029 electoral roadmap as much as the 2025 governance signal.
With no official announcement yet, the speculation continues to swirl—reflecting the NDA’s wide bench of leadership and its need to strike political balance, administrative competence, and optical resonance.
