Tuticorin: Tuticorin-based V.O. Chidambaranar (VOC) Port Authority has signed key memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with Indian PSUs NTPC Green Energy Ltd and Indian Port Rail Corporation Limited (IPRCL), marking a major boost to India’s clean energy and green mobility initiatives. The agreements coincide with the inauguration of India’s first port-based Green Hydrogen Pilot Project at VOC Port by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal.
Pioneering Green Hydrogen at VOC Port
The Green Hydrogen Pilot Project, built at a cost of Rs 3.87 crore, will generate 10 Nm³/hr of green hydrogen. This energy will power port colony streetlights and an electric vehicle charging station. VOC Port thus becomes the first port in India to produce green hydrogen, setting a benchmark for renewable energy adoption at ports.
Strategic MoUs to Enhance Connectivity and Mobility
The MoUs signed include:
- VOC Port and IPRCL: Focused on developing rail connectivity to the Outer Harbour project, enhancing cargo movement efficiency.
- VOC Port and NTPC Green Energy Ltd: Aimed at implementing green mobility solutions at the port, including electric vehicle infrastructure.
Expanding the Green Energy Portfolio
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also laid the foundation for a pilot green methanol bunkering and refueling facility with a 750 m³ capacity, at a project cost of Rs 35.34 crore. This initiative aligns with the proposed Coastal Green Shipping Corridor between Kandla and Tuticorin, positioning VOC Port as a central green hub in South India.
Other recent projects at VOC Port include a 400 KW rooftop solar plant, increasing the port’s total rooftop solar capacity to 1.04 MW, the highest among Indian ports. Additionally, a Rs 24.5 crore link conveyor connecting Coal Jetty-I to the port stack yard will enhance coal handling efficiency by 0.72 MMTPA.
