IndiGo has appointed Retired IAS officer Mr. Vikram Singh Mehta as its new Chairman, succeeding Mr. Venkataramani Sumantran, who led the airline through a crucial post-pandemic recovery phase over the past three years.
Mr. Mehta, who has been serving on IndiGo’s board, brings with him decades of diverse experience across public administration, corporate leadership, and policy research. A former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the 1978 batch, he served in the civil services for two years before transitioning into the private sector.
Over his illustrious career, Mr. Mehta has held prominent positions in some of India’s leading companies, including serving on the boards of Colgate Palmolive India, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Larsen & Toubro. Notably, he was the Chairman of Shell Group of Companies in India and also held leadership roles as CEO of Shell Markets and Shell Chemicals in Egypt.
In addition to his corporate achievements, Mr. Mehta is deeply involved in policy and academic work. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Centre for Social and Economic Progress, a leading public policy think tank. He was also the Executive Chairman of Brookings India and a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution.
His contributions to both governance and business have earned him multiple accolades, including being named “Businessman of the Year” by Asia House in 2010 and “Best Independent Director” by the Asia Centre for Corporate Governance and Sustainability in 2016.
Mr. Mehta holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University. He also has two postgraduate degrees—one in Politics and Economics from Oxford University and another in Energy Economics from Tufts University.
His appointment marks a new chapter in IndiGo’s leadership, combining rich governance experience with a global corporate perspective.
