Mumbai: In a key administrative reshuffle, the Government of Maharashtra has appointed senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Rajesh Kumar Meena, an IAS officer of 1988 batch from Maharashtra cadre, as the new Chief Secretary of the state.
This transition comes as Sujata Saunik, an IAS officer of 1987 batch, the first woman to hold the top bureaucratic post in Maharashtra, demits office today upon her retirement.
Who Is Rajesh Kumar Meena?
A 1988 batch officer of the Maharashtra cadre, Rajesh Kumar Meena hails from the Sawai Madhopur district of Rajasthan. Known for his efficiency, administrative acumen, and vast experience across multiple departments, Meena is widely regarded as one of the most seasoned officers in the state bureaucracy.
He has served in numerous key roles and was most recently functioning as the Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) in the Revenue Department, where he oversaw significant policy decisions and administrative reforms.

The appointment of Meena, a native of Rajasthan, as the Chief Secretary of Maharashtra has triggered a wave of pride in his home state. Rajesh Kumar Meena’s appointment is notable for its timing—he assumes the top bureaucratic post with just 61 days left before his superannuation in August 2025. Sujata Saunik: A Historic Tenure Ends
As Meena takes the helm, Sujata Saunik concludes her remarkable journey as Maharashtra’s Chief Secretary. A 1987 batch officer, she created history by becoming the first woman to hold the top administrative position in the state. Two additional senior officers were also considered for the top position: Iqbal Singh Chahal (IAS: 1989: MH), serving as Additional Chief Secretary in the Home Department, and Bhushan A. Gagrani (IAS: 1990: MH), the Municipal Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai.
