Indian Masterminds Stories

Lucknow: The indomitable spirit of 2002-batch IPS officer Aparna Kumar has added yet another milestone to her extraordinary career. Known for her grit, courage, and record-breaking achievements in mountaineering, Aparna has now become the first woman officer to be appointed Joint Commissioner of Lucknow Police.

This appointment marks a historic moment in Uttar Pradesh policing, highlighting Aparna’s ability to scale new heights—not just on snow-capped peaks but also in professional excellence.

Scaling Heights in Life and Career

Aparna Kumar’s story is one of unmatched determination and resilience. Despite the demanding responsibilities of an IPS officer, she has established herself as a world-class mountaineer, becoming the first civil servant to conquer the Seven Summits—the highest peaks of all seven continents.

Her achievements in mountaineering are as impressive as her policing career. In 2016, Aparna conquered Mount Everest, battled pneumonia to reach the South Pole carrying 35 kg of equipment, and six months later scaled Mount Denali in North America, completing the Seven Summits challenge.

In recognition of her adventurous spirit and service, she has received prestigious awards, including the Rani Lakshmi Bai Puraskar (2015) and the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award (2018).

Personal Life

She is a distinguished 2002-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre and a world-renowned mountaineer. Born on August 30, 1974, in Karnataka, she is a law graduate from NLSIU Bengaluru who cleared the UPSC exam on her first attempt. She made history as the first Indian woman IPS officer to conquer the Seven Summits, reaching the highest peaks of all seven continents, including Mount Everest in 2016 and Mount Denali in 2019. She also became the first woman IPS officer to trek to the South Pole in 2019.

Her achievements have earned her the prestigious Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award (2018) and the Rani Lakshmi Bai Bravery Award. Professionally, she has served in key roles, including as the first woman director of the ITBP Academy.

Historic Firsts

Aparna’s list of firsts continues to grow:

  • First IPS officer to conquer the Seven Summits
  • Mentored the first ITBP expedition to hoist the Tricolour atop Mount Balbala in 2021
  • First woman Director of the ITBP Academy in its six-decade history
  • First woman officer to become Joint Commissioner of Lucknow Police

This 52-year-old officer had just returned from completing her Master’s degree in Law from the University of California, Berkeley, before receiving the news of her new posting. Previously, she was serving as Inspector General in the Human Rights Department.

Priorities as Joint Commissioner

Aparna Kumar has outlined a clear vision for her new role. Her focus will be on:

  • Fair, transparent, and professional investigations
  • Integration of technology and scientific evidence in crime-solving
  • Data-driven policing to improve conviction rates
  • Balancing effective law enforcement with constitutional safeguards

Her previous experience as SP in districts including Firozabad, Hamirpur, Sitapur, and Chitrakoot, and in specialized wings such as Intelligence, PAC, and Telecom, equips her to bring modern policing practices to Lucknow. She also served as the Sports Secretary of the UP Police Board, demonstrating her leadership across diverse portfolios.

Mentorship and Modernisation

Senior officers believe Aparna’s exposure to international policing frameworks and interactions with global law enforcement agencies will help modernize crime investigation practices in Lucknow.

Despite her stellar achievements, Aparna continues to mentor young officers and women aspirants, encouraging them to excel in policing while pursuing personal passions.

Inspiring Legacy

Aparna Kumar exemplifies the synergy of courage, skill, and professionalism. Her story inspires both her colleagues in the police force and aspiring women leaders, proving that success follows those who exhibit indomitable courage—whether on the world’s highest peaks or in the corridors of public service.
