New Delhi: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has postponed the release of the Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2026 and Indian Forest Service (IFS) 2026 notifications, which were originally scheduled for January 14, 2026. The Commission cited administrative reasons for the delay and announced that the detailed notifications will be released “in due course.”
Notification Postponement: What the Official Statement Says
In an official notice on its website, UPSC stated, “The Notification of Civil Services Examination, 2026 and Indian Forest Service Examination, 2026, scheduled to be notified on 14.01.2026, has now been postponed due to administrative reasons and the same will be notified in due course.”
The Commission did not specify the exact nature of these administrative reasons. Experts suggest such delays may arise from internal administrative clearances, finalization of vacancies, or updates to the online application portal.
Impact on Prelims and Application Timeline
According to the UPSC Exam Calendar 2026, the Preliminary examination for CSE 2026 was tentatively scheduled between May 24 – 31, 2026, with online applications expected to open shortly after the notification release.
With the postponement –
- Aspirants will have to wait for new dates for the notification and the application window.
- Tentative schedules for prelims, mains, and interviews may be rescheduled accordingly.
- Candidates are advised to regularly check the UPSC official website for updates.
Face Authentication to Be Introduced at Exam Centres
In addition to the notification update, UPSC has announced that all candidates appearing in the Civil Services and IFS exams will undergo facial authentication at the examination venue. This step aims to enhance security and prevent impersonation during the examinations.
What Candidates Can Expect Once the Notification Is Released
Once the UPSC releases the official notification, candidates will be able to access –
- Tentative number of vacancies for services like IAS, IPS, IFS, and other Group A and B central services
- Service-wise vacancy details including Indian Revenue Service, Indian Audit and Accounts Service, and allied services
- Category-wise vacancy breakup for General, OBC, SC, ST, and PwBD candidates
- Detailed eligibility criteria, application process, and exam schedule
The notification serves as the official blueprint for the Civil Services Examination 2026 cycle.
What Aspirants Should Do Now
UPSC aspirants preparing for the 2026 cycle are advised to –
- Keep tracking the official UPSC website for updates
- Continue preparation for prelims and mains, as syllabus and pattern remain unchanged
- Stay updated about any changes in application process or examination schedule
While the delay is uncommon, UPSC has clarified that the notification will be released once all administrative formalities are finalized.
