Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has emphasized that ensuring the income, respect, and sustainable livelihood of weavers is a top priority for the state government. Speaking at a review meeting of the Weavers Department, he called for a comprehensive and practical plan to address the challenges faced by the weaving community.

Protecting Income and Respect of Weavers

The Chief Minister stated that weavers are not just carriers of tradition but also a vital pillar of the state’s economy. He stressed that protecting their income and dignity is crucial for Uttar Pradesh’s social and economic development.

He highlighted key challenges faced by weavers:

  • Rising cost of raw materials
  • Lack of modern designs and technology
  • Limited access to markets

Strength of Uttar Pradesh’s Weaving Sector

According to officials, Uttar Pradesh is home to nearly 1.99 lakh weavers, ranking sixth in India. The state is a leader in carpets, rugs, and mats, with a strong presence in bedsheets, furnishings, and blankets.

In 2024-25, India’s total handloom exports were ₹1,178.93 crore, with Uttar Pradesh contributing ₹109.40 crore (9.27%).

Cluster Development and Modernization

CM Yogi instructed the development of weaver clusters where production would be integrated with:

  • Quality control
  • Design and branding
  • Packaging and marketing

He suggested organizing weavers into registered groups to facilitate collective production and marketing, while linking them with modern technology, tools, and skill development programs.

Focus on Market-Ready Designs and Exports

The Chief Minister highlighted the importance of designs aligned with market demand. He stressed strengthening the role of designers and marketing experts and enhancing ties with export agencies to boost global reach. Additionally, he encouraged the use of digital platforms, e-commerce, and branding to connect weavers directly with customers.

Addressing Rising Power Costs

Considering increasing electricity costs, CM Yogi directed relief measures for powerloom weavers. He emphasized reducing electricity expenses and promoting solar energy solutions to ensure long-term profitability for weavers.

Toward a Sustainable and Prosperous Weaving Sector

The Chief Minister’s directives aim to create a modern, cluster-based, and market-oriented weaving ecosystem in Uttar Pradesh, ensuring sustainable income, skill development, and global competitiveness for the state’s weaving community.
