Lucknow: In a landmark step towards strengthening the foundation of early childhood education, the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government is set to inaugurate over 3,000 fully functional Balvatikas across the state on August 15, aligning with the spirit of Independence Day and the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
These Balvatikas — redesigned, child-friendly early learning centres — are being launched by transforming co-located Anganwadi centres into vibrant, activity-rich spaces that provide Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) to children aged 3 to 6 years.
Focus on the Most Critical Learning Stage
As highlighted in the NEP 2020, the first eight years of life are the most formative in a child’s cognitive, linguistic, and emotional development. Recognizing this, the state government has launched a state-wide drive to upgrade and repurpose Anganwadis into Balvatikas that cater to these early developmental needs.
Special Launch Events on Independence Day
To commemorate the opening of these centres, Independence Day celebrations will be held at each Balvatika. These events will see participation from public representatives, parents, and education officials, and will include awareness programmes highlighting the importance of early education and nutrition.
Infrastructure and Learning Materials Upgraded
According to the Basic Education Department, the Balvatikas have been equipped with:
- Wonder Box activity kits
- Learning corners
- Child-friendly furniture
- Outdoor play equipment
- Print-rich learning environments
- Nutritious mid-day meals
Special training for ECCE educators, shiksha mitras, and Anganwadi workers has also been conducted to ensure that children are “school ready” both academically and nutritionally.
Low-Enrolment Schools Merged to Consolidate Resources
In another strategic move, low-enrolment schools have been merged with nearby institutions to better utilize resources and create more vibrant learning spaces. Renovation and beautification work has been carried out, making classrooms welcoming and age-appropriate for early learners.
Leadership Speaks
Basic Education Minister Sandeep Singh said,
“Making over 3,000 Balvatikas operational on August 15 is a major step towards providing children a solid foundation for learning. The Yogi government is prioritizing early education to ensure holistic development of every child.”
Director General of School Education, Kanchan Verma, added that all efforts have been made to provide a safe, engaging, and nutritious learning environment for children in these centres.
