Police in India often face taunts for their fitness as many personnel appear overweight. In Assam, though this is set to change as police in this NE state will have to be perfectly BMI ready .
Assam police has already started working on a new initiative that requires all police personnel, including IPS and state civil officers, to be in shape. While the state’s top cop will be the first to be assessed, those who fail will be given until November to get in shape and then VRS!
1991 batch IPS officer and DGP of Assam police, Mr. GP Singh informed that police department in the state has decided to go in for professional recording of Body Mass Index (BMI) of all Assam Police personnel including IPS/APS officers and all DEF/Bn/Organisations.
They also have given three months time to all Assam Police personnel including IPS & APS officers till August 15th and then start BMI assessment in the next 15 days.
He tweeted, “In line with directions of the Hon CM, Assam Police headquarter has decided to go in for professional recording of Body Mass Index (BMI) of all Assam Police personnel including IPS/APS officers and all DEF/Bn/Organisations. We plan to give three months time to all Assam Police personnel including IPS & APS officers till August 15th and then start BMI assessment in next fifteen days.”
He further said, “All those who are in obese (BMI 30+) category would be offered another three months time to reduce weight (till November End) and after that VRS option except those who have genuine medical ground like thyroidism etc. DGP Assam Police would be the first to have the BMI taken on August 16th.”
GP Singh’s tweet regarding this went viral and now people are reacting positively on his tweet and liking it. A user named Zia Haq said, “Fitness, mental & physical, is at the heart of an effective police force. Way to go. But I think cops on the ground need adequate resting hours. They are mentally stressed bcoz of long hours. An overworked policeman loses focus, patience & discretion.”
While Another user named Praveen Verma replied, “Sir you raise the bar of professionalism and standards to the entire police department of India, it will definitely help to state and set new benchmark.”
