Additional Chief Secretary, Environment, Climate Change and Forests, Government of Tamil Nadu, IAS officer Supriya Sahu has shared a video of a massive African Baobab Tree which is located inside the Campus of Chinmaya Vidyalaya in Rajapalayam in Tamil Nadu. The trunk of a baobab can store 100,000 liters even during harsh drought conditions. While the tree is native to the African continent, it is believed to have been planted in Rajapalyam by Arab traders.
In her post on X, Ms. Sahu wrote that she was awestruck to see this massive African Baobab tree located inside the campus of Chinmaya Vidyalaya in Rajapalayam in TN. “It resembles a humongous elephant foot. Botanically called as Adansonia digitata, it is also known as elephant tree because elephants love to eat it. As per National Geographic, when a thirsty elephant sees a baobab, what it sees is a big fat bottle of water.”
This tree is estimated to be at least 700 years old. It is also one of the oldest trees in Tamil Nadu.
