In a rescue operation that lasted for two hours, an elephant calf was rescued from a ditch it had fallen into. The incident occurred in the Kamrup West Division in Assam. And the rescuers were forest department staff and the local people.
As news of the calf being trapped in the ditch spread, people of the area gathered around it and called the forest department, whose personnel rushed to the scene. In order to ensure the calf does not get injured, a crane was used to dug and flatten the area around the ditch, while forest personnel went down to help the baby elephant pull itself up.
In a video of the rescue shared by Assam Forest on social media, forest personnel can be seen pushing the baby elephant gently from behind to help it climb up as the crane continued to dig around it. Finally, the calf was able to climb out to safety, and was seen walking away from the commotion. “The calf later had a happy reunion with the herd,” Assam Forest tweeted.
