IAS Association Condemns Online Targeting of CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s Family Amid Political Row of “Vote Theft”

The Indian Administrative Service (IAS) Association on Friday condemned the online trolling of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Mr. Gyanesh Kumar’s family, following allegations of “vote theft” made by opposition leaders, including Congress MP Mr. Rahul Gandhi. The association issued a strong statement, calling such attacks “unwarranted” and asserting its commitment to protecting the dignity and integrity of civil servants.

“The IAS Association notes with concern that unwarranted criticism has been directed against the family members of the Chief Election Commissioner, who also happen to be well reputed civil servants,” the association stated in its post on X.

Protection of Families of Civil Servants

The association further said, “The IAS Association strongly deprecates such personal attacks unconnected with the discharge of official duties. We stand for the dignity and integrity in public service.” The statement comes after Mr. Kumar’s family, particularly his daughters, faced personal attacks on social media in recent days.

CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s Civil Service Journey

Mr. Gyanesh Kumar, a 1988-batch Kerala cadre IAS officer, retired as Secretary in the Ministry of Cooperation in January 2024. He was later appointed as Election Commissioner in March and assumed charge as Chief Election Commissioner in February this year. His long-standing administrative career and service record reflect his contributions to governance and institutional development.

Political Controversy and EC’s Response

The row erupted after Mr. Rahul Gandhi alleged irregularities in the Bihar Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise and in a constituency in Karnataka during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, accusing the Election Commission of “vote theft” to benefit the Bharatiya Janata Party. While several opposition parties have echoed this charge, the Election Commission has denied any wrongdoing.

At a press conference, Mr. Kumar firmly rejected the allegations, stating that Mr. Gandhi should either file an affidavit with proof of his claims or issue an apology.

Upholding Institutional Integrity

The incident highlights the importance of protecting the independence and dignity of constitutional institutions such as the Election Commission. The IAS Association’s statement underscores the role of civil servants in maintaining neutrality, credibility, and trust in governance, while also safeguarding the rights and privacy of their families from political controversies.
