Born into a rural family in Rajasthan, Mr. Hemant Pareek faced numerous challenges. His father – a priest – earned little, while his mother worked as a MNREGA laborer to support the family. With his father and sister often struggling with health issues, the burden of responsibility fell heavily on his mother. Mr. Pareek himself had a disability, with one hand not functioning properly. As their struggles intensified, the family relocated to Haryana. There, his mother toiled during the day in MNREGA and worked on private lands to make ends meet.
Once, she was denied ₹220 by a local contractor. When Hemant stepped in, the contractor mocked him, asking, “Are you a collector?” This remark ignited Hemant Pareek’s dream of joining the civil services. This aspiration was further fueled when his college seniors ridiculed him, mockingly suggesting he should become an IAS officer.
The journey was far from easy. Hemant lacked both financial resources and a strong educational background. He didn’t know English until the 10th grade, when his teacher insisted he must pass the subject. Despite these challenges, he managed to finish high school and enroll in an Agriculture program for his undergraduate studies. Although he expected a scholarship, the funding ceased. Without money, he couldn’t afford meals on Sundays when the college mess was closed. Yet, he persevered, fueled by his determination and the unwavering support of his mother.
After finishing college, Hemant dedicated a year to preparing for the UPSC exam and successfully cleared it in 2023, securing AIR 884. Each day of this journey felt like an eternity. There were moments when he contemplated ending his life, but his friends provided crucial support during these dark times. How did he manage to complete college and make his way to Delhi? Who stood by him throughout this arduous journey? Mr. Pareek shares his entire story in this video.
