THE NAME THAT CAUGHT ATTENTION
The name “Kalanidhi Naithani” piques curiosity, and for good reason. It was given to him by his grandfather, a poet with a penchant for meaningful names. “Kalanidhi,” meaning “treasure of art,” was a fitting choice, as it encapsulates the versatile personality of a man who transitioned seamlessly from the sciences to administrative service.
Raised in the serene mountains, Mr. Naithani was shaped by the intellectual rigour of his parents. His mother, a celebrated teacher, and his father, a retired professor, nurtured his academic spirit, laying the foundation for his illustrious career.
THE SCIENTIST YEARS
Kalanidhi Naithani’s first step into the professional world was deeply rooted in science. Armed with a B.Tech in Electronics and Communication, he began his career as a scientific officer at the Nuclear Fuel Complex, a premier unit under the Department of Atomic Energy. His expertise took him to C-DOT, the Centre for Development of Telematics, where he worked in Bengaluru and Delhi for over five years.
It was during his stint in Bengaluru that the seeds of a different ambition were sown. Despite a stable and promising career, he felt a pull toward the Civil Services. Managing his demanding work schedule, he began studying for the UPSC Civil Services Examination post-dinner every night, quietly working toward a goal he hadn’t shared with most of his colleagues.
“When I finally told them I’d cleared the exam, they were shocked. Some even joked that my unique name made my claim believable!” Mr. Naithani shared with the media.
TRANSITION TO IPS
In 2010, Mr. Naithani joined the IPS, leaving behind a successful career in science. He cleared UPSC CSE with AIR 190. This decision was neither impulsive nor easy—it was the result of years of meticulous planning and self-discipline.
His love for sports, especially badminton and volleyball, remained intact throughout this period. Even during his most intense preparation days, he ensured that leisure activities were not sacrificed. “Time management is crucial. I found time to study when disturbances were minimal and made efficient use of every resource, including online material,” he explains.
POLICING AND ACADEMIC PURSUITS
Mr. Naithani’s thirst for knowledge didn’t end with his induction into the IPS. He pursued a Master’s degree in Police Management from Osmania University, which further sharpened his approach to law enforcement. This professional course, integrated with the public administration concepts he had studied earlier, gave him a strategic edge in handling complex challenges.
“The course allowed me to equip myself with professional knowledge and tools that are essential for modern policing,” he shares.
A CAREER BUILT ON ACTION
From his first posting in Kannauj to his current role in Jhansi, IPS Naithani has faced diverse and demanding situations. One of his most memorable cases involved rescuing a kidnapped child during his initial days in the force. The child, found with minor injuries, was safely returned to their family, an achievement that brought immense satisfaction to Mr. Naithani and his team.
Another notable initiative under his leadership was Operation Khushi, which focused on reuniting missing children with their families. Many of these children had been missing for years, and their recovery underscored the deep impact that proactive policing can have on society.
For Mr. Naithani, such moments define the essence of police work. “When you see a mother reunited with her lost child, the sense of job satisfaction is unparalleled,” he says.
CRACKDOWN ON CRIME
Mr. Naithani’s tenure is also marked by strategic measures against organised crime. In one notable instance, he booked 30 gangsters in a single day under preventive laws, an operation designed to send a clear message to criminals. “The goal was to disrupt organised crime networks and ensure a safer environment for citizens,” he explains.
Under his current leadership in Jhansi, initiatives like Operation Conviction and Operation Durga are aimed at addressing serious offences, especially crimes against women. His focus extends to enhancing governance in remote areas, improving traffic management, and strengthening law enforcement along interstate borders.

He emphasises the importance of a balanced approach, urging aspirants to integrate work and study effectively. “UPSC preparation alongside a job is entirely possible. Use your time wisely, concentrate on what matters, and keep a steady focus,” he advises.
