“Women are Aadishakti. We have the power to bless the world with our work. With faith, determination, and a little encouragement, there’s nothing we can’t achieve,” says Dr. Pritpal Kaur.

Imagine a heavily pregnant woman, not only managing her health and well-being but also orchestrating two critical elections in a remote and challenging district. Meet 2016 batch IPS officer Dr. Pritpal Kaur (Nagaland cadre), the Superintendent of Police of Phek district in Nagaland, who did exactly that. Without taking a single day off from her duties, she ensured the smooth conduct of the 2024 Lok Sabha and Urban Local Bodies (ULB) elections, even as she prepared to welcome her first child. Her story redefines dedication and determination, setting a remarkable example of balancing personal and professional responsibilities.

Dr. Kaur took it upon herself to ensure that the elections were conducted efficiently and peacefully. Logistics and infrastructure in this remote area posed significant challenges, but she didn’t let that deter her. From planning the electoral process well in advance to personally supervising every aspect of the preparation, she exemplified meticulous management.

“Being a mother is as rewarding as serving my nation. The two roles are equally demanding but fulfilling in their own ways,” she told Indian Masteminds. Her determination to not let her pregnancy affect her professional responsibilities stems from her upbringing. “My mother was a working woman, and her example has always inspired me to strike a balance between family and work.”

PREGNANCY AMIDST ELECTION DUTY

Dr. Kaur’s pregnancy coincided with an intense period of election work. Knowing the stakes, she began planning months ahead to leave no room for lapses on election day. “Logistics and infrastructure are always constraints in areas like Phek. But with systematic planning and a dedicated team, we overcame these hurdles,” she recalls.

During this time, she maintained a disciplined routine. “I’m an early riser. I would start my office hours early and ensure my meals and exercise were on time. This helped me stay healthy and focused,” she says. The district hospital, located within 100 meters of her residence, ensured that she had immediate access to medical care.

“As a doctor by education, I understood the importance of systematic planning during pregnancy,” she adds. Her meticulous preparation paid off as the elections concluded smoothly and peacefully. Shortly afterward, she delivered a healthy baby girl. “The success of the elections and my daughter’s safe birth are my greatest rewards,” Dr. Kaur says with pride.

BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY

Dr. Kaur’s commitment extended beyond her professional duties. Recognising the need for better facilities at the district hospital, she donated a labour bed, a water purifier, and essential supplies for the staff nurses. “I gave my one-month salary in my daughter’s name as a token of gratitude and to contribute to the well-being of the community,” she shares.

Her gesture reflects her belief in giving back to society and improving the lives of those around her. “Healthcare facilities in remote areas need support, and I’m happy to have contributed in my own small way,” she adds.

Dr. Kaur, during her eighth month of pregnancy, conducted training and career guidance sessions at Phek Government College.

BALANCING ACT

Balancing the demands of a high-pressure job and motherhood is no small feat. Dr. Kaur acknowledges the prejudices women often face in professional settings. “Whenever a woman performs her professional duties, there are always judgments. But with willpower, family support, and self-confidence, we can achieve anything,” the officer says.

She emphasises the importance of self-care amidst the chaos. “Women are natural multitaskers, but we mustn’t forget to take care of ourselves. Being mentally and physically prepared is crucial to handling our responsibilities effectively,” Dr. Kaur advises.

Dr. Kaur gave training to SHGs for livelihood skills, food processing and plastic free materials and bags, all while being nine months pregnant.

IPS officer Pritpal Kaur’s story is a powerful reminder of the strength and determination women bring to their roles, whether at home or in the workplace. Her ability to manage two major elections during pregnancy, her dedication to community welfare, and her unwavering focus on both her professional and personal responsibilities make her an inspiration for all.

“Women are Aadishakti,” she says. “We have the power to bless the world with our work. With faith, determination, and a little encouragement, there’s nothing we can’t achieve.”
