Indian Masterminds Stories

In the heart of Gautam Buddh Nagar’s Police Commissionerate, something extraordinary is brewing—not just coffee, but connections. Café Rista, a newly renovated gem, isn’t your typical cafeteria. Nestled close to the Family Dispute Resolution Clinic, this pastel-hued haven is redefining how the police and the public interact. With quirky quotes, Bollywood-inspired decor, and deliciously affordable food, Café Rista is where law enforcement meets leisure, offering a refreshing blend of community and comfort.

Indian Masterminds exclusively spoke with IPS officer Preeti Yadav, Additional DCP, Noida, to know more about this unique café.

A VISIONARY CONCEPT

The newly renovated cafeteria, aptly named Café Rista, has opened its doors, promising to be more than just a place for a meal. Deriving its name from the Hindi word for relationships, Café Rista aims to foster better connections between the police and the public while offering a sanctuary for those involved in family disputes.

The café is the result of the innovative and welfare-centric vision of senior police officials, IPS Laxmi Singh, CP of Gautam Buddh Nagar, and IPS Babloo Kumar, Ad. CP, Headquarters. The café’s design, brought to life by IPS Preeti Yadav, ADCP Women Safety, is strategically nestled close to the Family Dispute Resolution Clinic, also known as the Counselling and Mediation Centre.

Counseling sessions are often prolonged and emotionally draining. Recognizing this, Café Rista provides a serene environment with pastel hues and quirky life quotes to offer a much-needed respite. Visitors can relax, recharge, and enjoy quality food at nominal prices, making the process a bit more bearable.

“Since family dispute cases are usually very taxing and time-consuming, there are times when the complainants may be asked to wait for several hours, at a stretch. We established this cafe in the police Commissionerate so that while waiting, they can sit and talk, sort their differences out, and spend some quality time with each other instead of just waiting and getting impatient,” the officer told Indian Masterminds.

A COZY RETREAT FOR OFFICERS

Police personnel lead demanding and stressful lives, often marked by irregular hours and the challenges of wearing a uniform. Dining in public restaurants can be daunting for many officers. Café Rista addresses this issue by providing a cozy retreat within the Commissionerate premises. Here, officers can unwind, enjoy affordable meals, and spend quality time with their families in a comfortable setting.

“It’s a welfarist measure. A pastel-hued café with quirky quotes and affordable, quality food provides a welcome relief. Police officers often hesitate to dine publicly due to uniforms and irregular hours. The area around is either packed with fine dining or thelas. There’s no in-between where the officers could sit and peacefully eat at a reasonable price. Keeping all these things in mind, we have established Cafe Rista and they have a cozy cafe on their premises to enjoy with their families,” stated Ms. Yadav.

A CAFÉ LIKE NO OTHER

With its pastel décor and a wall adorned with images of iconic police characters from Bollywood movies, the café is a nod to popular culture, serving as a reminder that police officers, too, are ordinary people beyond their uniforms.

The café operates on a self-service model, managed by the police with a chef hired from a private organization. Patrons can order directly at the counter and collect their meals, fostering a casual and interactive dining experience.

BRIDGING THE GAP

Café Rista’s innovative approach extends beyond its immediate environment. It serves as a bridge between the police and the public, offering a space where informal interactions can take place. Visitors to the café might find themselves dining alongside high-ranking officers, breaking down barriers and fostering a sense of community. This proximity can be enlightening for the public, which often perceives police officers as distant or unapproachable.

Moreover, the café provides an alternative venue for the public to seek assistance or file complaints. Instead of going to a police station, individuals can visit the café and express their concerns in a more relaxed atmosphere, knowing that help is readily available.

“Through this, they are getting an idea of our institution, how we work, and where they can seek help. Moreover, sitting with the police and eating food with them makes them realize that a police officer is also just a common man in uniform with the same struggles that they face in their day-to-day life, which deepens their insight related to the police department,” Ms. Yadav told Indian Masterminds.

A MODEL FOR THE FUTURE

The success of Café Rista has inspired ambitions for wider implementation. Proposals are underway to establish similar cafés in other Commissionerates and districts, creating more spaces where positive interactions between the police and the public can flourish.

Café Rista is more than just a café; it is a symbol of progressive policing and community engagement. Blending a welcoming environment with the practical needs of police officers and the public exemplifies how innovative thinking can enhance the fabric of society. Whether you are seeking a place to unwind after a stressful session or hoping to see a different side of the police force, Café Rista stands ready to welcome you with open arms.

So, the next time you’re in Sector 108, drop by Café Rista. Strike up a conversation with a cop, enjoy some delectable food, and witness firsthand the changing face of community policing.
