In an endeavour to address the escalating concerns surrounding the mental health of students in government schools, the Gurugram administration has inaugurated ‘Project Mann’. This innovative initiative seeks to identify and treat psychological issues among students, fostering a safe and supportive environment within government educational institutions. The project is set to kick off on December 1.

Speaking to Indian Masterminds, IAS officer Nishant Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Gurugram, shared details about the project.

MENTAL HEALTH CHALLENGES

“As the shadow of mental health challenges looms larger in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Atman app emerges as a beacon of hope. The application offers a comprehensive solution to guide teens through life’s challenges,” said the IAS officer.

Recognizing the surge in anxiety and anger issues among students post-pandemic, local authorities in Gurugram have taken proactive measures to assess the overall mental well-being of students and provide them with necessary psychological support. The administration has devised a standard operating procedure (SOP) for teachers to follow in addressing these concerns.

A pivotal session was organised in order to sensitise the school principals to the project.

PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTS

The officer further informed that under Project Mann, students will undergo psychological tests facilitated through the Atman app, a tool specifically designed to assist adolescents in navigating life’s complexities. The district administration has revealed that 46,000 students have already undergone analysis through the app, and the results are eagerly anticipated.

Mr. Yadav emphasized the unprecedented challenges children have faced over the past three years, profoundly impacting their mental health. In many government schools, the absence of permanent counsellors poses a challenge in addressing these issues effectively. The Atman app aims to bridge this gap by allowing the analysis of students’ mental health, providing SOPs to teachers and parents, and offering professional assistance when necessary.

DC Nishant Yadav highlighted, “During the sensitization drive, school principals expressed concerns over an observable increase in anxiety, panic, anger, and violence among students. The app’s implementation is intended to equip teachers with valuable insights into the mental well-being of their students, enabling them to respond appropriately.”

DATA PRIVACY

The Deputy Commissioner assured that school principals have been sensitized about Project Mann, emphasizing that the Atman app adheres to stringent data privacy standards to safeguard the sensitive information collected. Mr. Yadav acknowledged that children may be hesitant to confide in their parents and teachers about their mental struggles. The app, with its user-friendly interface, aims to create a comfortable space for students to seek help without reservations.

“If this project witnesses successful implementation and tangible positive outcomes, there’s a strong potential to expand its reach. Our children’s mental health isn’t a mere checkbox; it’s a priority,” he asserted. This statement reflects the administration’s commitment to the long-term success of Project Mann and its potential to serve as a model for addressing mental health challenges in schools beyond Gurugram.

As the results of the psychological tests conducted through the Atman app are anticipated, there is optimism that Project Mann will not only provide immediate support to students in need but also contribute to a broader conversation about prioritizing mental health in educational settings across the nation.
