When you download an app on your mobile, we are asked to give various permissions like your contacts, location, camera, messages and mic. We normally tick the checkboxes and grant all such permissions. But, have we ever paused and thought what if the app misuses our data? Normally, such thoughts never cross our mind.
If they ever do, the usual thinking is – I don’t have much wealth or info to lose. What wrong can it do to me? At worst, it can share my likes and dislikes with advertisers and I may be subjected to unwanted ads in every web application I use.
Most of these websites and applications are based out of India. Naturally, our data too is stored abroad. Suppose, somebody morphs your photograph or shares your bank account details with a scamster, how will we be able to sue the offender? And where – in Indian courts or abroad? Who can be a better person to answer these questions than a person who has done two doctorates in cyber law and forensics. He is Dr. G.K. Goswami, a 1997-batch U.P.-cadre IPS officer and founder Director of Uttar Pradesh State Institute of Forensic Sciences (UPSIFS).
An Additional Director General of Police (ADG), Dr. Goswami in a candid chat with Indian Masterminds, talks about how to keep your data safe. He also talks about what is e-murder and what is e-dacoity? Can a person be killed digitally? How can such crimes be solved? Is it necessary to give all permissions to a mobile app before using it? Can we keep our data safe and still use a mobile phone app? Are there no free lunches in the cyber world? What are the laws governing such activities? Please watch the full interview to get answers of all such intriguing questions.
