From building Jaipur’s metro to powering Rajasthan with renewable energy, IAS Ajitabh Sharma’s journey blends engineering precision with administrative vision to reshape the state’s development story
Indian Masterminds Stories

Born on December 11, 1972, in Jaipur, Ajitabh Sharma grew up surrounded by the vibrant mix of tradition and progress that defines Rajasthan’s capital. The Pink City, with its heritage and modern challenges, shaped his worldview early on. A curious and ambitious mind, he excelled academically and eventually earned a B.Tech in Civil Engineering from IIT Delhi, an education that equipped him with a structured, analytical approach to solving problems.

That blend of technical precision and social awareness would become his hallmark in public administration. In 1996, driven by a calling to serve his home state, he joined the Indian Administrative Service as part of the Rajasthan cadre, setting in motion a career that would redefine governance in multiple sectors.

LEARNING LEADERSHIP AT THE GRASSROOTS

Sharma’s early postings as Collector and District Magistrate in Kota, Churu, Bhilwara, Karauli, and Barmer gave him first-hand exposure to Rajasthan’s diverse realities. From tackling drought-related issues in desert regions to implementing large-scale development projects in urban districts, he developed the ability to blend policy with on-ground practicality.

His approach was rooted in engaging directly with communities, ensuring that decisions taken in government offices translated into visible change on the streets.

A CAREER THAT SPANS EVERY CORNER OF GOVERNANCE

Over the past 25 years, Sharma has worn many hats, each role adding to his depth as an administrator. His professional journey is defined by high-impact leadership in sectors like energy, industry, transport, and technology.

  • Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, Rajasthan – At the highest levels of state governance, he coordinated critical policy decisions and cross-departmental initiatives.
  • Principal Secretary for Mines & Petroleum, IT & Communication, Energy – Shaped policies for key sectors that power Rajasthan’s growth, from natural resources to cutting-edge technology.
  • Chairman of DISCOM and Rajasthan Renewable Energy Corporation Limited – Led major upgrades to power infrastructure and accelerated the shift toward renewable energy.
  • Chairman & Managing Director, Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation Limited – Oversaw the expansion and modernization of Jaipur’s public transport system.
  • Industries & Commerce, RIICO – Spearheaded industrial growth and hosted the Rising Rajasthan Global Investment Summit 2024, drawing investors from across the world.
  • OSD, Bhiwadi Integrated Development Authority (BIDA) – Drove integrated development projects in one of Rajasthan’s fastest-growing industrial hubs.
  • Collector & DM in multiple districts – Ensured governance remained people-centric, bridging policy and public needs.

Currently, he serves as Principal Secretary, Energy Department, focusing on strengthening Rajasthan’s energy backbone with an emphasis on solar and wind power, critical for the state’s sustainable future.

TRANSFORMING SECTORS WITH IMPACT

Sharma’s imprint on Rajasthan’s development is visible across multiple sectors. In the energy field, his work with the Rajasthan Renewable Energy Corporation Limited helped the state scale up its renewable capacity, tapping into its abundant sunlight and wind corridors. His leadership in the Discoms improved power distribution networks, reducing losses and enhancing reliability.

In Jaipur Metro, he combined urban planning with citizen convenience, creating infrastructure that eases congestion and boosts connectivity. In the industry, his strategic direction at RIICO ensured that Rajasthan’s investment potential was showcased globally, positioning the state as a competitive player in manufacturing and clean energy.

THE MIND OF AN ENGINEER, THE HEART OF A PUBLIC SERVANT

Colleagues describe Sharma’s style as strategic yet hands-on. His engineering roots give him a problem-solving mindset, breaking big challenges into workable solutions, while his years in the field keep him attuned to the human side of governance. He believes in giving maximum attention to core responsibilities, focusing on work that creates tangible outcomes rather than being consumed by bureaucratic cycles.

ROOTED IN RAJASTHAN

Despite his vast administrative reach, Sharma’s connection to Jaipur and Rajasthan runs deep. The city’s heritage, its people, and its evolving needs have been at the center of his career decisions. While he maintains a low public profile outside his official work, those who have followed his journey see a man deeply invested in the state’s long-term progress.

SHAPING THE ROAD AHEAD

Today, as Principal Secretary of Energy, Sharma is steering Rajasthan toward becoming a leader in renewable power production. His combined experience in infrastructure, industry, and governance positions him as a key architect of the state’s modernization journey.

His legacy is being built not just on projects completed but on the systems improved, the sectors energized, and the mindset shifts he has inspired in the bureaucracy. For the young officers who follow, Sharma’s career is a reminder that public service is as much about reforming the system as it is about running it.

From Jaipur’s streets to shaping Rajasthan’s future, Ajitabh Sharma’s story is one of vision turned into action, an ongoing chapter in the state’s progress that continues to unfold.
