IPS Sumit Ramteke on the Cases That Changed His Career and Shook Organized Crime | Video Interview

IPS Sumit Ramteke shares the stories behind high-profile investigations, from a ₹10 crore cannabis seizure and cybercrime crackdown to exposing a ₹150 crore job scam that duped 60,000 youths.
Indian Masterminds Stories

A police operation rarely begins with flashing sirens. More often, it starts with a whisper, an unusual phone call, a suspicious transaction, or a small clue that refuses to fit. For IPS officer Sumit Ramteke, currently posted as ADCP Kanpur, those clues have led to some of Uttar Pradesh’s biggest investigations in recent times.

A 2022-batch IPS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, Ramteke entered policing after leaving behind an engineering career. Moving from Maharashtra to one of India’s largest and most demanding states meant adapting to a new language, a different culture, and an entirely different scale of policing. But it also gave him the opportunity to work on investigations that tested every aspect of modern law enforcement.

THE 15-KILOMETRE CHASE THAT EXPOSED A BIGGER NETWORK

One of the operations that brought Ramteke into the spotlight began with intelligence inputs about narcotics trafficking. What followed was a dramatic 15-kilometre chase that ended with the seizure of nearly 600 kilograms of cannabis worth around ₹10 crore.

The recovery itself was significant, but the investigation did not stop there. As officers followed financial trails, transport routes, and interstate links stretching to Odisha, it became clear that they were not dealing with a local smuggling racket. Fresh recoveries, including another 250 kilograms of cannabis, pointed towards a much larger organized network operating across state borders.

For Ramteke, the real challenge was never just recovering the drugs. It was identifying the people who kept the supply chain alive.

UNMASKING A ₹150 CRORE PYRAMID SCAM

If narcotics investigations demanded relentless fieldwork, another case required peeling back layers of deception.

A fake recruitment racket operating as a pyramid scheme had allegedly cheated nearly 60,000 young people of around ₹150 crore. What initially appeared to be an ordinary fraud complaint slowly revealed a business built on false promises, fake employment opportunities, and the aspirations of thousands of job seekers.

The case became a reminder that financial crimes often leave invisible scars. The money may disappear, but so do confidence, hope, and years of savings.

CRIME HAS CHANGED. SO HAS POLICING.

Ramteke has also led a widely discussed operation against cyber criminals, where weeks of surveillance, technical tracking, and coordinated planning resulted in the arrest of nearly twenty accused.

These investigations underline how policing today extends far beyond patrolling streets. It demands digital intelligence, interstate coordination, financial analysis, and patient investigation before a single arrest is made.

For the young IPS officer, every case carries a lesson, not just about crime, but about society itself. Whether it is drug abuse, online fraud, or pyramid schemes targeting ambitious youth, he believes awareness is often the first line of defence.

Behind every headline lies months of invisible work. And for officers like Sumit Ramteke, that work continues long after the cameras leave.
