Some officers lead from the spotlight. Others lead by staying alert, listening carefully, and acting at the right moment. Praveen Kumar belongs to the second kind. With over three decades in policing and intelligence, the 1993-batch IPS officer of the West Bengal cadre has now taken charge as the Director General of the Border Security Force (BSF), India’s largest and most important border guarding force.
Appointed in January 2026, Praveen Kumar will serve as DG BSF till September 30, 2030, when he retires from service. Having earlier led the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), he steps into the role at a time when border security demands both firm action and careful judgment.
EARLY YEARS IN POLICING
Praveen Kumar began his career in the West Bengal Police, working closely with people and handling difficult law-and-order situations. These early years shaped his understanding of ground realities and taught him the value of patience and discipline. Over time, he earned trust as an officer who focused on solutions rather than noise.
His work in the state police laid the foundation for the national-level responsibilities that would follow.
A LONG STINT IN INTELLIGENCE
One of the most important phases of Praveen Kumar’s career was his service in the Intelligence Bureau. Rising to the position of Special Director, he dealt with sensitive national security issues that required sharp analysis and complete discretion.
This intelligence experience gave him deep insight into cross-border threats, internal security risks, and the methods used by hostile elements. It also trained him to think ahead—an essential skill for any leader guarding international borders.
LEADING THE ITBP IN TOUGH TERRAIN
In September 2025, Praveen Kumar was appointed Director General of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police. The ITBP guards India’s high-altitude borders along the India-China frontier and also plays a major role in disaster response, rescue operations, and counter-terrorism.
He took charge from Rahul Rasgotra in a formal ceremony at ITBP Headquarters. Leading a force that operates in extreme weather and difficult terrain further strengthened his command experience.
AT THE HELM OF THE BSF
Before his regular appointment, Praveen Kumar was given additional charge of the BSF in November 2025. In January 2026, he formally became its Director General, succeeding Daljit Singh Chawdhary, who retired on superannuation.
As DG BSF, he now leads the force responsible for guarding India’s borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh. The BSF plays a key role in preventing infiltration, smuggling, and terrorism, while also assisting civil authorities during emergencies and disasters.
STRONG ACADEMIC BACKGROUND
Alongside field experience, Praveen Kumar has built a strong academic base. He holds a B.E. (Honours) in Civil Engineering, along with degrees in law—LL.B. and LL.M. He also earned an M.Phil. from the University of Madras and completed the National Defence and Strategic Studies course at the National Defence College, New Delhi.
This mix of education and experience helps him approach leadership with clarity and balance.
AWARDS AND RECOGNITION
Over the years, Praveen Kumar has been honoured with several prestigious awards, including the Indian Police Medal, President’s Police Medal, Police (Special Duty) Medal, Police Antrik Suraksha Seva Padak, and the Asaadharan Aasuchana Kushalata Padak.
Born on September 5, 1970, he has served the nation for more than 30 years with consistency and commitment.
LOOKING AHEAD
As he leads the BSF till 2030, Praveen Kumar carries the responsibility of protecting India’s most sensitive borders. With his calm style, intelligence background, and deep field experience, he represents steady leadership—quiet, focused, and firmly rooted in service.
