Purnea’s Sweet Corn Revolution: Transforming Farms into Profitable Ventures

In Purnia, Bihar, sweet corn cultivation transforms farming, boosts income with high demand and quick harvest cycles, marking agricultural innovation.
Indian Masterminds Stories

In the fertile lands of Purnea, Bihar, a new agricultural initiative is taking root, promising substantial benefits in record time: the cultivation of Sweet Corn and Baby Corn. This ambitious project, aimed at transforming traditional farming practices into profitable ventures, has yielded impressive results. Motivated by the potential for greater returns and faster harvest cycles, farmers have embraced this innovative approach wholeheartedly.

The journey began with a vision to not only enhance agricultural productivity but also to empower local farmers as ‘agri-preneurs‘. A significant development is the rising demand for sweet corn and baby corn in foreign countries. This demand has transformed the Seemanchal region, including Purnea, into a hub for these crops.

The increasing international interest has brought joy to farmers, as their cultivation efforts are now yielding lucrative returns. Recognizing its economic potential, the Purnea district administration has prioritized the cultivation of sweet corn, making it a primary source of income for local farmers.

Indian Masterminds interacted with DM of Purnea and 2012 batch IAS officer Kundan Kumar, to gain insights into corn farming practices in Purnea.

THE CORN

Among the 12 varieties of corn, sweet corn, and baby corn stand out prominently. Not only are they rich in nutrients, but they also offer a delightful taste. This nutritional richness has made sweet corn particularly popular in leading five-star hotels and has driven up its demand.

Sweet corn is an excellent source of various nutrients including minerals, iron, and vitamins. This nutrient profile contributes to its high demand among consumers. They are beneficial for managing conditions like diabetes and can be used in various culinary forms such as salads and as a vegetable.

CULTIVATION

Sweet corn matures in just 100 days, allowing farmers the opportunity to cultivate up to three crops annually on the same field, thereby maximizing their agricultural productivity and income potential. To promote its cultivation, training sessions will be provided to farmers in 10 selected districts, alongside arrangements for marketing their produce.

During the Rabi season of 2023-24, special campaigns were launched across various districts of the state to promote sweet corn. These campaigns particularly benefited farmers in Purnea under the leadership of IAS Kunadan Kumar, resulting in significant increases in their income.

The cultivation of sweet corn has proven especially advantageous for farmers in Purnea, leading to notable improvements in their net income. The administration is offering comprehensive support to farmers, including training programs and the provision of seeds.

CORN IN PURNEA

Encouraged by government initiatives, farmers in Purnea district, Bihar, are increasingly adopting sweet corn farming practices. Traditionally known for cultivating normal maize during the Rabi season, the district administration has collaborated closely with the Agriculture Department to promote sweet corn cultivation, aiming to enhance farmers’ income.

Under the Aatma Yojana initiative, farmers, particularly in Chandi Panchayat of Purnea East block were encouraged to shift from wheat cultivation to sweet corn. In a significant departure, farmers in this area allocated 2.5 acres of land to sweet corn cultivation, moving away from their previous wheat crops.

Through this initiative, farmers received Sugar-75 sweet corn seeds and extensive training. Planting sweet corn in October allowed farmers to harvest and sell their crops within just 90 days, drastically reducing the waiting period for sales. This quick turnover proved beneficial for farmers, ensuring faster returns on their investments. The total cultivation cost per acre for sweet corn was estimated at 40 thousand rupees.

MARKET LINKAGE

Recognizing the benefits and increasing demand for corn, the administration in Purnea is actively pursuing market linkage opportunities with Mother Dairy. In the initial phase, discussions have been held with Ranchi Mother Dairy for procurement. The administration will ensure both training and marketing support for farmers across these districts. This initiative marks a transformative journey from farmer to agri-preneur.

Mr. Kumar emphasized, “Market linkage has been central to our efforts, and partnerships like the one with Mother Dairy are crucial for ensuring efficient distribution and expanded market reach.” This collaboration ensures that the agricultural produce reaches a wider consumer base, fostering a sustainable economic ecosystem that benefits both producers and consumers alike.

Corn (Maze) Field

SWEET CORN VILLAGE

The administration is planning to establish a Sweet Corn Village following the success of corn farming in the district. Mr. Kumar explained, “As we continue to sow the seeds of innovation and entrepreneurship, we envision a future where agriculture not only sustains livelihoods but also thrives as a cornerstone of economic growth.”

He further remarked, “Through dedicated efforts and support, we are proud to announce the upcoming establishment of a Sweet Corn Village. This initiative underscores our commitment to sustainable agriculture and community development. Farmers who participated as pilot cultivators shared their experiences during a recent workshop. Purnia has been traditionally known for maize, and this initiative promises greater benefits in a shorter period. The creation of a Sweet Corn Village is underway.”

BENEFITS

Farmers in Bihar are experiencing an increase in income from sweet corn cultivation, making it a reliable source of revenue.  On average, farmers yielded 20 thousand sweet corn cobs per acre, which they sold locally at a rate of 10 rupees per cob. This translated to a net profit of 1 lakh 60 thousand rupees per acre. Such profitability was a stark contrast to what farmers typically earned from wheat and paddy crops, making them exceptionally pleased with the results.

The Agriculture Secretary of Bihar recently announced that in response to the growing interest among farmers in sweet corn cultivation, the Agriculture Department has allocated Rs 54.99 lakh to promote sweet corn production in Bihar under the National Agricultural Development Scheme for the financial year 2024-25.

“As part of this initiative, seeds will be distributed during the Kharif season to encourage sweet corn cultivation across the state. This initiative is expected to significantly benefit farmers by enhancing their agricultural output and income opportunities. Together, we are cultivating more than crops—we are cultivating a brighter future for Purnia and its farmers,” Mr Kumar added.
