From Village Classrooms to Government Halls: How One Man Defied the Odds

How did a primary school teacher from a remote village become a prestigious IRS officer? Discover the remarkable journey of Sandeep Rana.
Indian Masterminds Stories

In a world where success often seems reserved for those with privilege and connections, IRS officer Sandeep Rana defies the odds. Coming from the small village of Mungeshpur on the outskirts of Delhi, Sandeep transformed his life from being a humble primary school teacher to becoming an esteemed IRS officer. His story highlights the power of hard work, family support, and the belief that anyone can achieve their dreams, no matter where they start.

In an exclusive conversation with Indian Masterminds, the 2012 batch IRS officer shared his journey.

A TEACHER WITH A VISION

Born and raised in Mungeshpur, Sandeep Rana’s early life was shaped by simplicity and a strong work ethic. His educational path was unconventional. With a primary teaching diploma in hand, he pursued a correspondence degree from Delhi University while simultaneously nurturing young minds as a primary teacher at MCD School, Delhi starting in 2004. Later on, he pursued post-graduation in History and Public Administration by distance mode.

Sandeep’s first job as a primary teacher allowed him to experience the joy of teaching but also ignited a desire for more. Even in those early days, he harbored a dream of serving his country as a civil servant. Despite the constraints of his village background and lack of formal guidance, he took the bold step to change his destiny.

A JOURNEY THROUGH THE RANKS: FROM POLICE TO CIVIL SERVICES

Sandeep embarked on his journey of self-improvement by appearing for the Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Exam, in 2003, after the loss of his father in the same year. His efforts bore fruit when he secured the first rank, a remarkable feat that set the stage for his career transformation. Thus, despite the absence of a mentor, Sandeep’s innate drive led him to join the Delhi Police as a Sub-Inspector in 2005, where he excelled as the best cadet in training.

His tenure with the Delhi Police was marked by dedication and excellence. However, Sandeep’s aspirations were far from fulfilled. He once again appeared for the CGL Exam, in 2004 and transitioned to the role of Inspector in the Central Excise and Customs Department in 2007. Just two years later, he achieved another milestone by becoming an Inspector in the Income Tax Department through the CGL Exam, in 2009.

STRIVING FOR EXCELLENCE: THE PURSUIT OF UPSC

While his career was on an upward trajectory, Sandeep’s ultimate dream remained unfulfilled. The desire to join the Indian Civil Services was a fire that refused to dim. In October 2009, driven by a resolute ambition, Sandeep relocated to Rajendra Nagar, a hub for UPSC aspirants, leaving behind his supportive family.

“During my tenure as Inspector, Income Tax in Delhi, I started preparing for civil services. It was really tough as I stayed away from my family, in a small room in Old Rajendra Nagar. I had to leave my mother, wife Ms. Sonia, and one year old daughter Asmita behind. I just had two attempts left according to age criteria and I knew I had to give my best,” he told Indian Masterminds.

Lack of guidance posed a significant challenge during this phase. Despite his remarkable achievement of securing the top rank in the 2003 CGL exam, Sandeep realized that success required more than just academic prowess—it demanded strategic preparation and mentorship. Undeterred by this hurdle, he persevered with faith and determination.

In his first UPSC attempt in 2010, Sandeep secured AIR-535, earning him a position in the Indian Defense Accounts Service (IDAS). Yet, his journey did not stop there. In 2011, he dared to dream bigger and appeared for the exam once more, securing an impressive AIR-122. This achievement led to his induction into the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) as part of the 2012 batch, a realization of his long-held aspiration.

“My first preference was definitely IAS and my second preference was IRS, Income Tax, because of family responsibilities. My brother is in the army and IRS would have given me the opportunity to have a longer tenure in and around Delhi and thus, take care of my family, specially mother”, he shared.

THE PILLARS OF SUPPORT

Sandeep’s journey is not only a tale of personal triumph but also a tribute to the strength of family support. His wife’s unwavering commitment, to taking care of their daughter and his mother, was a cornerstone of his success. Sandeep’s motivation to overcome obstacles was deeply rooted in his desire to repay his family’s faith and sacrifices.

The lack of formal guidance in his early career was a hurdle, yet Sandeep’s determination to rise above it underscores his remarkable resilience. Despite the odds, he transformed challenges into stepping stones, ultimately achieving his dream of becoming a civil servant.

“Now with the availability of social media, it’s easier to understand things and read similar stories of people like us who have cleared the examination. However, at that time, I was too scared to even attempt the UPSC as I believed it is a very big exam and someone like me would never be able to crack it,” he stated.

REACHING NEW HEIGHTS: A DIRECTOR’S ROLE

Today, IRS Officer Sandeep Rana serves as the Director, of Fit India and Khelo India Division in Sports Authority of India on a deputation basis, a position that reflects his dedication to public service and his commitment to contributing to the nation’s growth. His journey from a modest village background to a prestigious government position embodies the essence of hard work and perseverance.

“I had already worked on lower levels in the income tax and excise department and I realized during that period that I also wanted to work on managerial levels here which would give me more opportunities to work for public service, and get me a bigger platform and promotion opportunities. As a civil servant, I would have had the opportunity to work in diverse fields too which motivated me further,” he shared with Indian Masterminds.

Sandeep Rana’s story is a powerful reminder that one’s background does not define their destiny. With determination, self-belief, and a support system, he overcame adversity and achieved his dreams.
