In a world where dreams often get overshadowed by responsibilities, especially for women in rural India, Sushma Yadav chose to hold on to hers – firmly, fearlessly, and with unwavering faith. Her journey is not merely about cracking a competitive examination; it is about redefining perseverance, breaking societal barriers, and proving that determination can outshine every obstacle.
From facing repeated failures to balancing marriage and motherhood, Sushma’s story carries the quiet strength of resilience and the loud message of hope. Today, as she secures Rank 13 in the UP PCS/PSC 2024 examination and moves toward becoming a Sub-Divisional Magistrate, her journey stands as an inspiration for countless aspirants across the country.
“Failures never define you unless you allow them to. I treated every failure as a lesson, not a setback,” she told Indian Masterminds.
Journey So Far: From Aspirant to SDM
Her journey to success was anything but linear – it was a path shaped by persistence, patience, and an unwavering belief in her goal. After facing setbacks in four consecutive attempts, she finally triumphed in her fifth, securing an impressive Rank 13 in the UPPSC examination.
Her journey had its share of highs and lows. In UPPCS 2022, she reached the interview stage but fell short of final selection. The following year, in UPPSC 2023, she couldn’t even clear the preliminary examination – a phase she candidly describes as her toughest hurdle. Yet, instead of discouragement, these setbacks became stepping stones that strengthened her resolve.
Fate chose a deeply emotional moment to reward her perseverance. On March 29, 2026, while she was in Prayagraj writing her next Mains examination, the results were announced later that evening—bringing an overwhelming wave of joy to her and her family.
She said, “The moment I saw my result, all the struggles felt worth it. It was not just my success—it belonged to my entire family.”

Her Background: Strong Roots, Stronger Aspirations
Sushma Yadav’s story begins in the villages of eastern Uttar Pradesh. She hails from Singapore village in the Chauri Chaura area of Gorakhpur district and is also connected to Indara village in Mau through her husband’s side. Born into a family that valued education, she grew up in an environment where discipline and learning were deeply respected. Her father, Gopal Yadav, a school administrator, played a significant role in shaping her academic mindset.
Despite her family’s political background—being the granddaughter-in-law of former MLA Kapildev Yadav—Sushma chose not to step into politics. Instead, she aspired to serve society through administration. This ambition took root during her student days when she witnessed a Sub-Divisional Magistrate at an event.
“Seeing an SDM up close made me realize the power of administration to bring real change. That day, I decided that this is what I want to become.”
Educational Journey: Excellence with Determination
Sushma’s academic journey reflects her consistency and brilliance. She began her schooling at Uday Academy in Rudrapur and later completed her intermediate education from Sanskriti Public School in Gorakhpur. She completed her graduation in chemistry from Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gorakhpur University in 2016, followed by post-graduation from Banaras Hindu University, where she excelled in her studies and earned recognition as a gold medalist in M.Sc. Chemistry in 2018.
Her thirst for knowledge did not stop there; she further pursued B. Ed and LL.B., strengthening her academic and analytical foundation—an asset that later helped her in civil services preparation.

The Biggest Struggle: Between Dreams and Responsibilities
What makes Sushma’s success truly extraordinary is not just the rank she achieved, but the circumstances under which she achieved it. Her journey unfolded alongside major life transitions—marriage, motherhood, and increasing responsibilities at home.
In 2024, she got married to Pankaj Yadav, a lecturer who runs a college. Soon after, she embraced motherhood. Preparing for one of the toughest examinations in the country while raising a seven-month-old child and managing household responsibilities was no small feat.
At the same time, she had to deal with the societal expectations often imposed on women, especially in rural areas. Questions about balancing studies after marriage and subtle pressures to prioritize family over career were constant.
Yet, she refused to give up.
“There were days when everything felt overwhelming. But I reminded myself why I started—and that kept me going,” she added.
Preparation Strategy: The Power of Consistency
Sushma’s preparation journey was deeply rooted in discipline and self-belief. She relied heavily on self-study, often preparing from home while staying close to her family. The lockdown period proved to be a turning point, giving her uninterrupted time to focus and refine her strategy.
Instead of being disheartened by failures, she analyzed them carefully and improved with each attempt. Regular answer writing practice became a crucial part of her preparation, helping her develop clarity and confidence.
“Success in exams like PCS is not about studying everything, but about studying consistently and smartly.”
Her approach was simple yet powerful – stay consistent, stay focused, and never lose sight of the goal.

Interview Experience: A Test Beyond Books
Sushma’s interview experience reflected the multidimensional nature of the civil services examination. She was asked about social issues, particularly the challenges faced by women in regions like Purvanchal. She spoke about the deep-rooted patriarchal mindset that often affects girls’ education and opportunities.
Questions also explored how she would handle administrative challenges, such as addressing hunger or implementing policies effectively if she were in a leadership role. Interestingly, her hobby—gardening—also became a topic of discussion, where she was asked about practical aspects like caring for a Tulsi plant during winter.
“The interview tests your personality more than your knowledge. Honesty and clarity matter the most.”
The Role of Family: A Pillar of Strength
Behind Sushma’s success stands a family that believed in her dreams. Her husband, in-laws, and parents provided constant encouragement, creating an environment where she could continue her preparation without feeling restricted.
Living in a joint family while preparing for such a demanding exam could have been challenging, but in her case, it became a source of strength.
“My family never made me feel that I had to choose between my dreams and my responsibilities.”

Message for Aspirants: Lessons from Her Journey
Her journey carries powerful lessons for every aspirant. She emphasizes that success is not about avoiding failure but about persisting through it. According to her, patience and sustained effort are the true keys to cracking competitive exams.
“Even if you fail multiple times, don’t lose faith. Every attempt makes you stronger.” She also highlights the importance of breaking societal barriers, especially for women.
“Marriage or responsibilities should never be seen as obstacles. With the right mindset and support, everything is possible.”
A Story That Inspires a Generation
Her success is not just personal—it reflects a larger change in society. With women securing a significant number of top ranks in UP PCS 2024, her achievement becomes part of a powerful narrative of empowerment and progress.
Her journey sends a clear message: dreams do not have an expiry date, and circumstances do not define destiny.

A Dream That Became Reality
From a determined young girl inspired by an SDM to becoming one herself, Sushma Yadav’s journey is a story of courage, resilience, and unwavering belief. She did not let failures stop her, nor did she allow responsibilities to limit her aspirations.
“If you truly believe in your dream and work for it every single day, success will find its way to you.”
Today, as she steps into the role of a Sub-Divisional Magistrate, she carries not just her own dreams, but the hopes of countless others who now believe—because of her—that nothing is impossible.
