As Uttarakhand prepares to host the 38th edition of the National Games from January 28 to February 14, 2025, the Himalayan state is set to script history with its ambitious and sustainable approach. This marks the first time Uttarakhand will host such a grand sporting event. That is why the state is leaving no stone unturned to ensure the event stands out, not just in scale but in its legacy.

A GREEN AND SUSTAINABLE GAMES

And the person tasked with turning the dream into a reality is Special Principal Secretary (Sports) Mr Amit Sinha. “This is not just a sporting event; it’s a movement,” Mr Sinha told Indian Masterminds, emphasizing the state’s unique initiatives to make the games environmentally sustainable.

Uttarakhand aims to host the National Games primarily powered by solar energy, setting a benchmark for eco-friendly sporting events. Additionally, all medals for the games will be crafted from recycled e-waste, symbolizing a commitment to sustainability and innovation.

The state is also planting a tree for every medal winner under the “Sports Van” initiative. The designated area near Dehradun will stand as a living legacy of the games for decades to come. “We want these games to not only inspire athletes but also create a lasting positive impact on our environment and communities,” Mr. Sinha adds.

MASSIVE VOLUNTEER SUPPORT

One of the highlights of Uttarakhand’s preparations is the unprecedented volunteer turnout. Over 32,000 individuals have registered to support the games, the highest for any National Games in the country.

However, hosting a summer sporting event in the winter chill of Uttarakhand presents its own challenges. With athletes and officials arriving from across the country, acclimatizing to the state’s weather conditions could be a concern. To address this, a team of top-notch doctors and physiotherapists will be on standby throughout the event.

LOGISTICS AND ATHLETE-CENTRIC PLANNING

With over 10,000 athletes, officials, and coaches expected to participate, meticulous logistical arrangements are in place. From mapping travel plans to ensuring comfortable accommodations in hotels, every detail has been accounted for.

“The dietary needs of athletes have been a priority. We have curated menus that include millets, promoting nutrition and sustainability. The menu is planned to repeat after eight days, ensuring variety and balance throughout the games,” reveals Sinha.

PLANS TO BE ON GLOBAL SPORTS MAP

The state government’s vision extends far beyond the event itself. Amit Sinha and his team are drafting a comprehensive legacy policy to ensure the long-term utilization of the infrastructure developed for the National Games. Over ₹100 crore has been invested in procuring world-class sports equipment and building state-of-the-art facilities.

“We are not just building infrastructure for these games; we are creating a permanent asset for the children of Uttarakhand,” says Sinha. The policy includes establishing sports academies across the state to nurture young talent, aiming to prepare athletes for the 2036 Olympics. “This is our 12-year vision to put Uttarakhand on the global sports map,” he adds.

ENGAGING LOCALS

Recognizing the importance of community involvement, the government has launched awareness campaigns across the state to encourage participation. Sports complexes in various regions are being activated to engage local communities as spectators and volunteers. The games aim to ignite a passion for sports among Uttarakhand’s youth, fostering a culture of athleticism and teamwork.

IMPACT ON TOURISM

The National Games 2025 is expected to boost sports tourism in Uttarakhand significantly. With top-notch facilities like shooting ranges and gymnastics arenas, the state is set to attract national and international events in the future. “We are showcasing Uttarakhand as a hub for sports tourism. The games will open avenues for Delhi and nearby cities to visit our state and experience its natural beauty alongside world-class sports infrastructure,” says Mr. Sinha.

As the countdown begins for the 38th National Games, the vision and meticulous planning under Mr. Amit Sinha’s leadership promise an event that will set new standards in sustainability, community engagement, and long-term impact. From solar-powered venues to the “Sports Van” initiative, every aspect of the games reflects a commitment to innovation and growth.

“This is not just about hosting a successful event; it’s about building a brighter future for Uttarakhand through sports,” he concludes. The games are poised to leave a legacy that will inspire generations, making Uttarakhand a beacon of sports excellence and environmental sustainability.
