AI Revolution: Students Ask Away, Teachers Get Supercharged

How about a classroom where students aren’t afraid to ask questions, where the internet is not just a source of information but a springboard for creativity, and where teachers have a powerful tool to personalize learning? This isn’t science fiction; it’s the AI revolution reality in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada district. 

INSPIRATION BEHIND THE PROJECT 

The inspiration for this program came from a simple observation. During a visit by Dantewada SDM Jayant Nahata, the children eagerly bombarded him with questions, a testament to their thirst for knowledge.

While visiting a residential hostel facility for students preparing for competitive exams in Dantewada, they began asking various exam syllabi, study plans, and available resources. “I realized that such basic questions are quite common. Considering we now have human-like aptitude in a machine, I pondered why we couldn’t provide students access to it and make them aware of this free technology to train them accordingly,” Mr. Nahata shared with Indian Masterminds.

GPT AI FOR STUDENTS 

GPT AI, known for its ability to engage in conversation and generate human-like text, is a large language model. The Limitless Learning Lab team, with the involvement of Mr. Nahata, envisioned integrating this technology into the school’s curriculum. With ChatGPT installed on 18 computers, the team conducted a session for 350 children, introducing them to the potential of AI in education.

The focus is clear – ChatGPT wasn’t meant to replace teachers but to empower them. “By providing easy access to information, ChatGPT could free up valuable class time for deeper discussions and critical thinking exercises. It could also foster creativity by helping students brainstorm ideas, write different kinds of content, and explore various perspectives,” the officer said. 

The benefits extend beyond academics. The project is empowering students to delve into subjects beyond the curriculum, whether it’s exploring career options or learning effective time management techniques. Students from grades 9 to 12 can leverage ChatGPT for coursework assistance, receiving tailored explanations and alternative approaches to complex concepts.

TEACHER’S PARTICIPATION 

But the impact isn’t limited to students. The officer and his team conducted a 4-day training for all 225 teachers in Dantewada in GPT/GenAI to bolster classroom learning, doubt resolution and teacher capacity building. It was done with the support of Fellows from Piramal Foundation.

Teachers are now utilizing ChatGPT for lesson planning, crafting engaging question papers, and developing innovative intervention strategies to improve learning outcomes.

For students, ChatGPT is becoming a bridge to overcome hesitation in asking questions. Whether it’s a career query, a study tip, or a simple “how-to,” ChatGPT is acting as a patient mentor. It is offering guidance and personalized solutions.

MONITORING AND EVALUATION 

A crucial aspect of the program is the monitoring and evaluation mechanism. By keeping a record of student inquiries and their satisfaction with ChatGPT’s responses, the team can continuously refine the training process and ensure it caters to the evolving needs of the students.

Ultimately, the goal is to empower education through AI while gaining valuable insights into children’s cognitive learning processes. The training program for teachers covers the fundamentals of ChatGPT – from logging in to crafting effective prompts and utilizing its features like multilingual capabilities.

POSITIVE RESULT

The results have been encouraging. Teachers report a noticeable increase in student engagement in the class, both for learning purposes and project work. Students are becoming more vocal, fostering richer classroom discussions, and demonstrating a newfound enthusiasm for exploring the world of AI tools.

Perhaps the most significant success lies in raising awareness. “Barely a handful of people were familiar with AI tools before the program’s inception. Now, the entire school community has a basic understanding of AI and its potential applications in education,” said Jyoti Babu. Mr. Jyoti Babu is a Gandhi fellow at Batch-15 Piramal Foundation. 

By harnessing the capabilities of AI, the program is empowering students, teachers, and the entire learning ecosystem.
