Clearing the UPSC Civil Services Examination is challenging, and IPS officer Sharan Kambale’s journey reflects the effort it requires. From overcoming personal hardships to refining his study techniques, his preparation evolved with each stage of the exam. PRELIMS: MAXIMISING ATTEMPTS AND ACCURACY
Initially, Mr. Kambale attempted 70–73 questions but found his score limited due to inaccuracies. Increasing his attempts to 87–90 improved his results. He emphasised test series for identifying weak areas and refining accuracy. “Test series should help understand patterns and improve weaknesses,” he noted.
For core subjects:
- Polity: Relied on Laxmikant, focusing on Fundamental Rights, DPSP, and constitutional amendments.
- Geography: Used NCERTs (6th–12th) and prioritised map-based questions.
- History: Followed Spectrum for Modern History, emphasising INC sessions and freedom fighters.
- Economics: Used Mrunal for static concepts and current developments.
- Art and Culture: Studied NCERT Fine Arts, covering dance forms, temple architecture, and festivals.
INTERVIEW: CONFIDENCE AND RELEVANCE
For the personality test, Mr. Kambale focused on his Detailed Application Form (DAF), current affairs, and scenario-based questions. He linked personal experiences to socio-economic issues.
“Mock interviews refine communication skills and build confidence,” he advised. During the actual interview, he adapted his responses to the board’s temperament, staying composed and confident.
