Even 51 years later memories of first day at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of
Administration (LBSNAA), Mussoorie are still fresh in the mind of former UPSC Chairman Mr
Deepak Gupta, as it the events took place yesterday. His face glows up with feeling of pride
and joy. The bond among his batchmates is still strong as 12 of them have come together to
recount memories on the era gone by in a book called Rearview, Tales from Administration
and Diplomacy. He has given an interview to Indian Masterminds.

He recounted his childhood and training days at LBSNAA recalling that despite being son of a
senior IPS officer, why he never got to wear new jacket till he reached LBSNAA. Mr Gupta’s
eldest brother was in Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and remaining three joined the coveted
IAS. He also recalled why his father didn’t any of his children to join the Indian Police Service
(IPS) and why did the family consider even eating out a luxury.
He also recalled how some of his batchmates out on a trek in the Himalayas went missing
and had to be rescued by a helicopter and how another group staying in a rest house in
deep forest, building collapsed.
