Managing railway operations for Mahakumbh 2025 was a monumental task. In this exclusive interview, IRTS officer Ankit Agarwal shares valuable insights into the planning, challenges, and his personal experiences during the event.

The Mahakumbh is not just a religious gathering; it is a logistical challenge of immense scale. Millions of devotees travelled to Prayagraj to take a holy dip in the sacred rivers, and the Indian Railways played a crucial role in ensuring their smooth movement. A dedicated team of railway officials worked tirelessly to handle this massive operation, with Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) officer Ankit Agarwal, Divisional Operations Manager (DOM) of Prayagraj, playing a key role in the coordination efforts.

In an exclusive video interview with Indian Masterminds, Mr. Agarwal shared about his personal experience in detail.

INFRASTRUCTURE UPGRADES AND CAPACITY BUILDING

Managing the influx of passengers required extensive infrastructure improvements. Over the years leading up to Mahakumbh 2025, level crossings were removed, additional tracks were laid, and yards were modernised. These upgrades helped facilitate parallel train movements and reduced detentions, ensuring efficient traffic flow.

To handle the unprecedented rush, the railways deployed over 150 special trains on peak days, especially on Mauni Amavasya, when more than 50 million devotees were expected. Months before the event, the Railway Board and zonal headquarters coordinated to arrange fully operational train rakes from across India. These rakes were strategically stabled along the 700-kilometre Prayagraj division corridor to ensure their timely availability without disrupting regular traffic.

ENSURING TIMELY MAINTENANCE

With over 100 trains in daily service for 45 consecutive days, maintenance teams worked tirelessly to keep trains in operation. Any delays in servicing could disrupt the entire system, making efficient resource allocation critical. The challenge lay in ensuring that each rake remained in working condition while minimising downtime.

Given the massive crowds, the railway network adopted a multi-pronged approach to scheduling. Special long-distance trains, ring rail services connecting Prayagraj, Ayodhya, and Varanasi, as well as real-time demand-based services, were deployed. Predicting travel patterns helped in optimising train frequency and reducing congestion.

CROWD CONTROL STRATEGIES

Real-time coordination between the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Government Railway Police (GRP), and state agencies was crucial for managing crowds. Authorities identified peak travel patterns, with higher influxes from Jhansi and Satna on snan days and from Delhi and Mughal Sarai on weekends. Crowd holding areas, colour-coded enclosures, and guided foot-over-bridge movement ensured orderly boarding and deboarding, minimising platform congestion.

Real-time surveillance using CCTV cameras, drone imaging, and head-counting techniques provided accurate data on crowd density and movement. Predictive analytics played a role in managing passenger flow and ensuring smooth operations.

The successful execution of railway logistics at Mahakumbh 2025 showcased the efficiency of Indian Railways. The event highlighted the importance of meticulous planning, real-time adaptability, and innovative problem-solving in handling one of the world’s largest gatherings.
