The Resilient Journey of Shesh Paul Vaid: Twice Attacked, Twice Survived

Surviving two deadly ambushes, Shesh Paul Vaid's resilience and bravery in the face of terror defined his tenure as J&K's DGP.
Indian Masterminds Stories

Former IPS officer Shesh Paul Vaid, a name synonymous with resilience and dedication, was born and raised in the tumultuous region of Jammu & Kashmir. His life and career have been shaped by the challenges of serving in one of India’s most volatile areas. Despite the odds, Vaid rose through the ranks, eventually serving as the Director General of Police (DGP) in Jammu & Kashmir, a role he never imagined he would hold.

The Early Years: Rising Through the Ranks

Vaid began his illustrious career as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Badgaon, a region fraught with danger and unrest. His dedication and strategic acumen quickly earned him a promotion to Superintendent of Police (SP) in the same area. It was during these early years that he laid the foundation for what would become a hallmark of his career—combatting terrorism with unwavering resolve.

He became the in-charge of the first Anti-Terror Task Force in the region, a role that would see him engage in numerous anti-terror operations. Unlike many, Vaid was never motivated by medals or accolades; his focus was always on restoring peace to his homeland. In a bold move to counter the rising tide of terrorism, he distributed rifles to ten villagers, establishing the first Village Defence Committee, a strategy that would prove instrumental in the years to come.

The Unyielding DGP: Facing Terrorism Head-On

In 2016, following the death of militant leader Burhan Wani, Vaid took charge as the DGP of Jammu & Kashmir. The period that followed was one of the most challenging in the region’s history. Each day brought with it 50-60 incidents of stone-pelting, district headquarters were isolated, and terrorists proliferated like rats. The situation was dire, with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Army hesitant to engage.

It was in this chaos that Vaid launched Operation ‘All Out,’ a coordinated effort with commanders from every force to reclaim control from the clutches of terror. The operation was a turning point, but it came at a personal cost. Vaid faced multiple life-threatening attacks during his service, with two standing out as particularly harrowing.

The First Attack: A Brush with Death

One of the most terrifying experiences of Vaid’s career occurred while he was traveling with his wife and two-month-old daughter. Caught in a crossfire, the situation could have ended in tragedy. Yet, with his characteristic composure and quick thinking, Vaid managed to navigate through the hail of bullets, ensuring the safety of his family. This near-death experience only strengthened his resolve to fight against terrorism, no matter the personal risk.

The Second Attack: The Battle of Baramulla

As the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Baramulla, Vaid’s life was once again in grave danger. His movements had been leaked to terrorists, leading to a meticulously planned ambush. More than 15 terrorists, armed with Universal Machine Guns (UMGs), attacked from both sides. The odds were overwhelmingly against him. In the fierce exchange of gunfire, Vaid sustained severe injuries, with his hand being so badly damaged that it had to be reconstructed.

But Vaid’s will to survive and continue his mission was unshakable. He not only survived the attack but also continued to lead from the front, refusing to let terrorism claim another victory.

Strength in Family: The Pillar of Support

Through these perilous times, Vaid found his strength in his family. His wife and children were not just his source of comfort but his inspiration to keep fighting. Their unwavering support played a crucial role in his recovery and his continued commitment to his duty.

Legacy of Courage

Shesh Paul Vaid’s journey is one of extraordinary courage and resilience. Twice he faced death, and twice he emerged stronger. His story is a testament to the indomitable spirit of those who serve in the most dangerous conditions, often at great personal risk. Vaid’s legacy as a protector of Jammu & Kashmir is cemented not just by his strategic successes but by his personal sacrifices and the risks he willingly took to ensure a safer future for his people.
