The Self Taught Achiever Who Cracked UPSC Without Coaching

With no coaching, no shortcuts—just grit and self-study, Vandana Meena journeyed from a small Rajasthan village to the prestigious halls of the IAS. Read on…
Indian Masterminds Stories

In a world where coaching institutes promise success, Vandana Meena’s story stands apart. A 2022 batch IAS officer of the Rajasthan cadre, Vandana cracked the UPSC Civil Services Exam in 2021 with an impressive AIR 331, all through self-study. Her journey, rooted in perseverance and dedication, is a source of motivation for every aspirant who dreams of serving the nation.

EARLY YEARS IN RURAL RAJASTHAN

Born in Toksi, a small village in Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan, Vandana spent her early childhood amidst the simplicity of rural life. Her father, Prithviraj Meena, worked with the Delhi Police, and her mother managed the household. Despite growing up in a place with limited educational resources, Vandana’s passion for learning was evident from a young age. Her family later moved to Delhi, where she found better academic opportunities.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND THE UPSC DREAM

Vandana completed her schooling at St. Columba’s School, Delhi, where she consistently excelled in academics. She pursued Mathematics Honours from Delhi University, a subject that not only sharpened her analytical skills but also laid a strong foundation for UPSC preparation. While many aspirants flock to coaching centers, Vandana took a different path; she relied entirely on self-study, proving that success depends more on strategy and discipline than external guidance.

A UNIQUE PREPARATION STRATEGY

Unlike many candidates who invest in coaching classes, Vandana turned to online resources and self-curated study plans. She extensively used YouTube to understand complex topics, ordered books online, and structured her preparation with a rigorous schedule. For months, she maintained a disciplined routine, dedicating 15 to 16 hours a day to studying. Her ability to stay focused and her commitment to her goal played a crucial role in her success.

CRACKING UPSC AGAINST THE ODDS

UPSC is known for its unpredictability, and Vandana’s journey was not without challenges. The vast syllabus, the intense competition, and the pressure of self-study could have been overwhelming, but she remained determined. She focused on understanding concepts rather than rote learning, practiced answer writing daily, and revised multiple times. When the UPSC 2021 results were announced, her hard work paid off – she secured AIR 331 and stepped into the prestigious Indian Administrative Service.

NO SHORTCUTS, ONLY HARD WORK

After her success, Vandana often emphasized that there is no shortcut to cracking UPSC. It requires consistency, hard work, and belief in one’s abilities.

Today, as an IAS officer, Vandana Meena stands as an inspiration to thousands of UPSC aspirants. Her story proves that neither expensive coaching nor a privileged background is necessary to achieve great heights. All it takes is dedication, smart preparation, and the courage to believe in oneself.

For every aspirant battling self-doubt, Vandana’s journey is a reminder: success is possible, even against the odds.
