Crimes Are Now Sophisticated, So Are The Fighting Tools: IPS Alok Kumar

Indian Masterminds Stories

Just as lifestyles and work styles are continuously changing in this fast paced world, so are policing and crime. Keeping with the times, the natures of crime and ways of investigation have evolved too, according to IPS officer Alok Kumar.

Earlier, police had to deal with big gangsters, cases of dacoity, and homicides. Nowadays, they have to deal majorly with economic offences and cybercrimes. The challenges are much bigger, but, at the same time, technology has paved the way to fight sophisticated crimes with sophisticated tools.
Further, as the focus has shifted to outreach programmes and community policing, the perception of police among the public has also changed a lot. Now, it has become easy to reach out to police for help without fear or hesitation.
Inspired by some foreign laws, Mr. Kumar had started a victim-witness assistance program in Karnataka. Through this program, he and his team were able to get convictions in many cases.

In an exclusive conversation with Indian Masterminds, the 1994-batch IPS officer, who was also the youngest Commissioner of Bengaluru, shares details about his victims assistance program, the complexities involved in cyber cases, and his opinion on policing and its evolution.
