After Operation Sindoor, the Director General of Operations for the Indian Armed Forces – including the Army, Air Force, and Navy – began holding press conferences to keep citizens informed. After the very first briefing, social media lit up with a curious phrase: “Sham No Varunah”, followed by “Jai Hind.” Many people began searching for the meaning behind “Sham No Varunah.”

This phrase was introduced to the public by Vice Admiral A.N. Pramod, the current Director General of Naval Operations (DGNO). Since then, in every press conference, audiences have been impressed by Vice Admiral Pramod’s strategic insight and sharp tone regarding India’s naval operations.

For those curious about the meaning of “Sham No Varunah,” it is the Sanskrit motto of the Indian Navy, which translates to “May the Lord of Water be auspicious unto us.” Derived from the Taittiriya Upanishad, the phrase reflects the Navy’s reverence for the ocean and its crucial role in protecting India’s maritime interests.

These public addresses have clearly shown the mindset of the Indian Navy and the high level of morale within its ranks. Much of the credit for this renewed confidence and clarity goes to Vice Admiral Pramod.

So who is India’s DGNO, and why is this role so important in the country’s military operations?

The Man at the Helm

Vice Admiral Ajay Narayan Pramod, originally from Thrissur, Kerala, assumed charge as the Director General Naval Operations on January 15, 2024. A distinguished officer with over three decades of service, he was commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1990, after graduating from the Naval Academy in Goa as part of the 38th Integrated Cadet Course.

He is an alumnus of the National Military School, Dholpur, Rajasthan, where he studied from 1980 to 1986, completing his 12th standard. During his time at the school, he was a student of Udayabhan House, and his roll number was 902. At the time, his family was based in Gwalior, as his father was posted there.

Vice Admiral Pramod is a Sea King Air Operations specialist and a Communication & Electronic Warfare expert. He has completed the Staff Course at the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) in Wellington (Nilgiris) and the Naval Higher Command Course at the Naval War College (NWC) in Goa.

A Life of Service and Discipline

Born into a family that emphasized service and learning, Vice Admiral Pramod has upheld these values throughout his career. He is married to Mrs. Ambili Pramod and is a proud father to Chitranjali and Siddhanta.

Career Progression: From Deck to Command Centre

Over his illustrious career, Vice Admiral Pramod has commanded several frontline ships and critical installations:

  • INS Abhay – an anti-submarine warfare corvette
  • INS Shardul – an amphibious warfare vessel
  • INS Satpura – a Shivalik-class stealth frigate
  • INS Utkrosh – Naval Air Station in Port Blair

He has served as Fleet Operations Officer of the Western Fleet, Deputy Commandant of the Indian Naval Academy, Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Air), and Flag Officer Commanding Maharashtra Naval Area (FOMA). His leadership roles also extended into strategic acquisition, having been the Principal Director of Aircraft Acquisition at Naval Headquarters.

He has also served as a member of the Indian Strategic & Operational Council (INSOC) from 2016 to 2019, and of the Tactical Audit Group (TAG) from 2006 to 2009, contributing to high-level strategic planning and operational oversight within the Indian Navy.

Awards and Honours: Recognition of Distinguished Service

Vice Admiral Pramod’s service has earned him several prestigious military honors:

  • Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) – for distinguished service of exceptional order
  • General Service, Operation Vijay, and Operation Parakram Medals
  • Military Service Medals for long service (9, 20, and 30 years)
  • 50th and 75th Independence Anniversary Medals

He was also awarded the Uttar Pradesh Trophy and Eastern Naval Command Rolling Trophy during his Sea King Observer course for exceptional academic and operational performance.

Operation Sindoor: Strategic Synchronization at Sea

Operation Sindoor represents a unified military retaliation, involving the Indian Navy, Army, and Air Force. The Navy’s forward deployment in the North Arabian Sea demonstrated not only operational readiness but also India’s capability to project power responsibly and effectively in response to terrorism.

At the helm of the Indian Navy’s response stood Vice Admiral AN Pramod, the Director General Naval Operations (DGNO), orchestrating a swift and calculated maritime posture under the operation codenamed “Operation Sindoor.”

Vice Admiral Pramod highlighted that the Indian Navy continues to remain deployed at sea in a credible deterrent posture, ready to respond decisively to any further provocations from Pakistan.

The Strategic Role of DG Naval Operations

As DGNO, Vice Admiral Pramod plays a pivotal role in India’s national security architecture, especially during periods of heightened tension. He is responsible for formulating and executing naval operations, overseeing maritime strategy, and coordinating with counterparts in allied navies to manage regional security dynamics and prevent escalation.

In the context of Operation Sindoor, his leadership ensured that India responded with strategic restraint but operational readiness, sending a strong message against state-sponsored terrorism without provoking an all-out conflict.

A Flag Officer in Command of Peace Through Strength

As India navigates complex geopolitical currents in the Indian Ocean and beyond, leaders like Vice Admiral Pramod exemplify the ideal blend of operational expertise, strategic foresight, and composed leadership. Under his watch, the Indian Navy continues to secure the nation’s maritime interests – ready, vigilant, and resolute.
