It’s a classic case of who will bell the cat! Seven states now don’t have regular Director Generals of Police (DGP) now. These states – like Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab – have appointed ‘Acting’ DGPs since the process of involving Union Public Service Commission for creating a panel of three senior officials for appointing one of them as DGP has not been adhered to.
It’s a violation of the Supreme Court judgment in the Prakash Singh case. Some of the senior IPS officials who were contenders for the top police post in these states are unhappy with situation but none of them have approached the top court seeking its intervention. Prakash Singh himself has sought intervention of the SC but his application is yet to be heard.
All the officials are waiting for SC to hear Singh’s application hoping the court may come to aid them.
