Ex-IAS Officer Mr. Girish Chandra Murmu, till now the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir is the new Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India. He replaces Mr. Rajiv Mehrishi.
Mr. Murmu’s appointment as the 14th CAG of India was announced on August 5, 2020.
A 1985-batch IAS officer from Gujarat cadre who also holds an MBA degree from the University of Birmingham, Mr. Murmu previously served as the principal secretary to Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi when the latter was the Chief Minister of Gujarat.
During this period, Mr. Murmu also took charge as the Relief Commissioner, the Mines, and Minerals Commissioner as well as the Managing Director, Gujarat Maritime Board.
In April 2015, Mr. Murmu first moved to the Centre as Joint Secretary in the Expenditure Department. He has also held the charge of Additional Secretary in the Department of Financial Services between June 2016 and December 2017.
In May 2018, he became the Special Secretary after working in the Revenue Department as Additional Secretary. On 31 October 2019, Mr. Murmu was named as the first Lieutenant Governor of Union Territory
of Jammu and Kashmir.
Mr. Murmu in his capacity as the CAG of India will be looking after all the audits, as well as receipts and expenditures of the Government of India and the state governments. His duties will also include the audit of trading, manufacturing, profit and loss accounts, balance sheets, and
other subsidiary accounts kept in the government departments.
