Lucknow: In a significant administrative development in Uttar Pradesh Police, the Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC) has recommended 19 Deputy Superintendents of Police (DySPs) for promotion to the rank of Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP). The list includes Anuj Chaudhary, the 2012-batch PPS officer who gained public attention due to his role in the Sambhal violence case.
The DPC evaluated names of 29 officers from the 2006 to 2012 batches. However, consensus was reached on promoting only 19 officers, whose names will now be forwarded to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for final approval.
Anger Brews Among PPS Officers Left Out of Promotion List
While 19 officers are set to be promoted, a section of PPS officers has expressed dissatisfaction over being excluded. The key reason: they haven’t yet completed the mandatory 12 years of service, a prerequisite for promotion to ASP.
Several officers, through the PPS Association, have urged the government to reconsider this rule, especially since many ASP posts are currently vacant in the department. A proposal to relax the 12-year eligibility clause was sent earlier, but the government did not approve the request.
Who Is Anuj Chaudhary? A Policeman with a Sports Legacy and a Tough Image
Anuj Chaudhary, a 2012 batch officer selected through the sports quota, is a well-known name in UP Police. A recipient of the Arjuna Award in 2005, he transitioned into policing after a successful sports career. He currently serves as the Circle Officer (CO) of Chandausi Circle.
Chaudhary rose to prominence last year during a tense communal situation in Sambhal district involving a survey at Shahi Jama Masjid, where he sustained a bullet injury while on duty. His decisive handling of law and order during these events drew both praise and criticism.
Controversial Yet Supported: CM Backs Anuj’s Remarks
Anuj Chaudhary was also at the center of a controversy during a sensitive communal occasion when Holi and Juma fell on the same day. His statement – “Holi comes once a year, Juma comes 52 times. Those who wish to avoid colors should stay indoors.” – stirred debate. However, CM Yogi Adityanath publicly supported the sentiment, reinforcing Anuj’s image as a no-nonsense and outspoken officer.
Religious Event Complaint and Clean Chit
Mr Chaudhary also faced a complaint from former IPS officer Amitabh Thakur for allegedly attending religious programs in uniform, violating the official conduct code. After departmental inquiry, Anuj was given a clean chit and the matter was closed without further action.
Promotion List Expected Soon
SP Krishna Kumar Bishnoi confirmed that Anuj Chaudhary’s name has been cleared for promotion, though the official promotion list is yet to be released. Once approved by the Chief Minister, the promoted officers will be formally notified and assigned new responsibilities.
Despite Controversies, Anuj’s Leadership Acknowledged
While Anuj Chaudhary’s bold decisions have drawn criticism at times, his leadership and effectiveness have been acknowledged at the departmental level. As he awaits formal elevation to ASP, his public image as a tough and proactive officer continues to spark debate and admiration in equal measure.
