A group of 42 trainee IAS officers visited the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) on Sunday to gain insights into its operations and developmental efforts. Acting on the directives of GVMC Commissioner P Sampath Kumar, senior officials briefed the officers on various aspects, including key projects and overall performance, during a meeting held at the corporation’s premises.
Additional Commissioner DV Ramana Murthy provided an overview of road maintenance, engineering works, tendering procedures, and projects supported by the 15th Finance Commission.
The officers were also apprised of ongoing developmental activities such as the creation of theme parks, improvement of road junctions, and solar power initiatives aimed at reducing energy consumption.
Key details regarding the supply of 400 million liters of drinking water per day, water purification plants, and efforts to recycle treated water were shared with the trainees.
Officials highlighted measures to combat seasonal diseases, the implementation of the single-use plastic ban, and efforts to promote eco-friendly alternatives. Achievements in Swachh Survekshan cleanliness rankings, along with awards earned by GVMC and initiatives like rooftop gardens and green city projects, were also discussed.
The trainee officers were further informed about the disaster preparedness strategies adopted by GVMC to tackle natural calamities.
Chief Engineer P Shiva Prasada Raju, Chief Medical Officer ENV Naresh Kumar, Supervising Engineer KVN Ravi, Deputy City Planner Haridasu, and SRU Project Director Srinivasa Rajamani elaborated on these topics. Additionally, Srinivasa Rajamani, along with Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) Joint Commissioner Ramesh Kumar, explained the various development initiatives undertaken by the VMRDA.
