The Narendra Modi government has approved the 8th Pay Commission, paving the way for a significant salary hike for government employees in 2026. This decision brings much-needed relief and anticipation for employees across various ranks.

Overview of the 8th Pay Commission:

While the commission is yet to be formally constituted, the appointment of its members is expected soon. Once operational, the commission will analyze current salary structures and recommend revisions for salaries and pensions. Government employees, ranging from entry-level staff to senior officials, are set to benefit from this initiative.

Projected Salary Hikes:

Levels 1 to 5 Employees

  • Level 1 (Peons, Sweepers): Basic salary may increase from Rs. 18,000 to Rs. 21,300.
  • Level 2: Expected rise from Rs. 19,900 to Rs. 23,880.
  • Level 3: From Rs. 21,700 to Rs. 26,040.
  • Level 4: Basic salary may go up from Rs. 25,500 to Rs. 30,600.
  • Level 5: Anticipated increase from Rs. 29,200 to Rs. 35,040.

Levels 6 to 9 Employees

  • Grade Pay: Rs. 4,200 to Rs. 5,400.
  • Level 6 (e.g., Teachers, Gram Vikas Adhikaris): Basic salary projected to rise from Rs. 35,400 to Rs. 42,480.
  • Level 7: Expected increase from Rs. 44,900 to Rs. 53,880.
  • Level 8: From Rs. 47,600 to Rs. 57,120.
  • Level 9: Anticipated rise from Rs. 53,100 to Rs. 63,720.

Levels 10 to 12 Employees

  • Grade Pay: Rs. 5,400 to Rs. 7,600.
  • Level 10: Basic salary may increase from Rs. 56,100 to Rs. 67,320.
  • Level 11: Expected rise from Rs. 67,700 to Rs. 81,240.
  • Level 12: From Rs. 78,800 to Rs. 94,560.

Levels 13 and 14 Employees

  • Grade Pay: Rs. 8,700 to Rs. 10,000.
  • Level 13: Basic salary projected to rise from Rs. 1,23,100 to Rs. 1,47,720.
  • Level 14: Expected increase from Rs. 1,44,200 to Rs. 1,73,040.

Levels 15 to 18 Employees

    • Senior Civil Servants (IAS Officers, Secretaries)Level 15: Basic salary may increase from Rs. 1,82,200 to Rs. 2,18,400.
    • Level 16: From Rs. 2,05,400 to Rs. 2,46,480.
    • Level 17: Expected rise from Rs. 2,25,000 to Rs. 2,70,000.
    • Level 18: Basic salary may increase from Rs. 2,50,000 to Rs. 3,00,000.

Impact on Total Earnings:

The increase in basic salaries will lead to higher overall earnings, as components like dearness allowance, house rent allowance, and travel allowances are calculated as a percentage of the basic salary.
