In a significant development, Mr. PSR Anjaneyulu, a 1992-batch Indian Police Service officer, has been arrested by the Andhra Pradesh Police for his alleged involvement in the wrongful arrest and harassment of a Mumbai-based actor. Mr. Anjaneyulu, who previously served as the Intelligence Chief during the tenure of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government, was taken into custody in Hyderabad and is being transported to Vijayawada. He had already been placed under suspension in connection with the case.

The actor, whose identity has not been disclosed, had last year accused senior police officials of arresting her without due process and coercing her to withdraw a sexual assault complaint filed against a senior executive of a Mumbai-based corporation.

The arrest stemmed from a land-related cheating case filed by Mr. Kukkala Vidyasagar, a leader from the then-ruling YSRCP. The actor and her elderly parents were taken into custody without prior notice and remained in judicial detention for more than 40 days. The actor later alleged that the complaint was politically motivated and fabricated, and that the arrest was orchestrated under the direct instructions of Mr. Anjaneyulu, in collusion with other senior officers.

Following the change in government, the actor lodged a formal police complaint, prompting an investigation. In September, the state government suspended Mr. Anjaneyulu along with two other officials—Mr. Kranti Rana Tata, the then Commissioner of Police in Vijayawada, and Mr. Vishal Gunni, who was serving as the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in Vijayawada at the time.

The suspended officials stand accused of gross misconduct and acting under political pressure. Mr. Anjaneyulu has been specifically charged with abuse of authority, while Mr. Tata has been held responsible for failing to properly supervise the investigation. Reports suggest that Mr. Tata authorized the arrest based solely on oral instructions from Mr. Anjaneyulu. Meanwhile, Mr. Gunni is accused of neglecting his duty to rigorously verify the allegations before ordering the arrest of the actor.

The case highlights serious concerns about the misuse of power and political influence in police functioning. Investigations are ongoing as authorities seek to establish the full extent of the conspiracy and determine the appropriate legal action against those involved.
