NEW DELHI: With the first batch of Agniveers set to complete their four-year service under the Agnipath military recruitment scheme by the end of 2026, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is actively working on a roadmap to provide them post-service employment opportunities — especially within the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF).
The Agnipath scheme, introduced by the government in June 2022, recruited young Indians as Agniveers into the Army, Navy, and Air Force for a fixed four-year tenure without traditional pension benefits.
Details of Agniveers CAPF Integration
After completing their service, about 75% of Agniveers will exit the armed forces in 2026 as per scheme rules, while around 25% may be retained in regular cadres based on performance and force needs.
This means tens of thousands of trained personnel will soon be entering the civilian job market. Recognizing this, the Home Ministry has begun planning how to channel this workforce into India’s national security and policing ecosystem.
Home Ministry’s Policy Initiative for Agniveers CAPF Integration
Officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs have asked senior leadership across CAPFs — including CRPF, BSF, CISF, ITBP and SSB — to draft a comprehensive policy for inducting former Agniveers.
A committee led by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) is preparing models on how former military recruits can be absorbed, including the roles they can perform and proportion of vacancies they might fill.
The policy will be finalized in consultation with all CAPFs before approval by the ministry, a senior official told the media.
Agniveers CAPF Integration: Enhanced Reservation Quota in CAPF Recruitment
In a major policy shift from earlier plans, the Home Ministry has increased reservation for ex-Agniveers in CAPF Group C posts to up to 50%, up from the 10% quota originally proposed.
Under the new arrangement, half of constable-level vacancies in the Border Security Force (BSF) and other CAPFs will be reserved for Indian youth who served as Agniveers.
This decision aims to make recruitment easier for ex-Agniveers by recognizing their prior military training and service while supporting long-term employment stability.
Eligibility and Selection Process
Under the revised rules:
- Former Agniveers are exempted from the Physical Standard Test (PST) and Physical Efficiency Test (PET) in CAPF recruitment.
- However, they must appear for written exams just like other candidates.
This hybrid selection process acknowledges their existing skills while ensuring standardised assessment criteria.
What Is the Agnipath Scheme?
The Agnipath Scheme was launched by the Government of India in June 2022 as a short-term military recruitment programme to modernize and rejuvenate the armed forces.
Under this scheme:
- Recruits serve for four years with basic military training.
- After completion, select Agniveers can be offered permanent roles in defence or other security forces.
- Others receive a lump-sum Seva Nidhi package to support future employment.
The scheme attracted both support and criticism at launch, primarily around post-service career pathways.
