Indian Masterminds Stories

New Delhi – In a landmark move toward enterprise modernization, GAIL (India) Ltd. has successfully gone live with SAP S/4HANA, making it the first Maharatna Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) to fully migrate to SAP’s next-generation cloud-based enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. The transformation project, aptly named “Navodaya”, marks a new digital dawn in GAIL’s operational and technological journey.

Project Navodaya Officially Launched by GAIL Leadership and SAP India

The formal go-live was inaugurated by GAIL Chairman & Managing Director Sh. Sandeep Kumar Gupta, in the presence of senior leadership including:

  • Director (Finance) Mr R.K. Jain
  • Director (Projects) Mr Deepak Gupta
  • Director (HR) Mr Ayush Gupta
  • Director (Marketing) Mr Sanjay Kumar
  • Director (Business Development) Mr Rajeev Kumar Singhal

Seamless Migration Completed Within One Year

Hosted on a robust, scalable cloud infrastructure, the migration saw a complete transition from GAIL’s legacy ECC system to SAP S/4HANA Cloud—a move that not only strengthens the PSU’s IT backbone but also enhances agility, data-driven decision-making, and innovation readiness. Remarkably, the entire implementation was completed within the targeted timeline of one year, despite the inherent complexity of such a large-scale transition.

AI, Analytics, and Automation at the Core of GAIL’s New Digital Engine

With the adoption of S/4HANA, GAIL is now empowered to harness cutting-edge capabilities including:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning
  • Advanced Analytics and Real-Time Dashboards
  • Interactive Fiori Interface
  • SAP Joule Apps
  • Embedded Automation and Fast Data Processing

These technologies are expected to dramatically improve efficiency, transparency, and service delivery across the company’s operations.

Leadership Speaks on the Strategic Importance of Digital Transformation

Speaking at the launch, CMD Sh. Sandeep Kumar Gupta emphasized the significance of this milestone:

This is a strategic leap forward that will help us deliver even greater value to our customers, employees, and stakeholders.”

Director (Finance) Mr R K Jain added, “This transition to a cloud-enabled intelligent ERP system is not just about adopting new technology – it’s about building a stronger, smarter, and more agile enterprise.”

SAP India Lauds GAIL’s Vision and Execution

Manish Prasad, President & MD of SAP India, praised GAIL’s digital vision and seamless execution:

SAP S/4HANA is a reimagined digital core. This achievement will help GAIL grow exponentially in its journey toward AI-driven excellence and operational efficiency.”
