New Delhi: The President of India, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, has appointed Advocates Amitabh Kumar Rai and Rajiv Lochan Shukla as Judges of the Allahabad High Court. The appointments are effective from the date they assume charge of their respective offices.
Collegium Recommendation and Government Notification
On March 25, 2025, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended the elevation of Amitabh Kumar Rai and Rajiv Lochan Shukla to the Bench of the Allahabad High Court. Acting upon this recommendation, the Ministry of Law and Justice issued a notification formalizing their appointments.
Judicial Strength at Allahabad High Court
The Allahabad High Court, with a sanctioned strength of 160 judges, is currently functioning with 85 judges, including Chief Justice Arun Bhansali. The recent appointments aim to address the existing vacancies and enhance the court’s capacity to handle the growing caseload.
Tenure and Confirmation Process
Both Amitabh Kumar Rai and Rajiv Lochan Shukla will initially serve as Additional Judges for a period of two years. Following this tenure, their performance and conduct will be reviewed for potential confirmation as permanent judges.
