Artificial Intelligence (AI) has immense potential to revolutionize the private security industry, according to senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Manish Shankar Sharma. Speaking at a two-day security leadership summit, which concluded on Friday, the 1992-batch IPS officer highlighted the transformative capabilities of AI in optimizing operations, improving security, and reducing costs across the sector.
Mr Sharma, who is currently serving as the Additional Director General of Police in Madhya Pradesh, emphasized that AI could streamline routine tasks such as guard scheduling, incident reporting, and monitoring, thereby enhancing cost efficiency. He pointed out that automation of these tasks would not only reduce operational costs but also improve productivity within private security firms.
“AI can be invaluable in fraud detection and asset protection,” Sharma said. “By deploying AI tools to monitor transactions and activities in real-time, businesses can identify anomalies in industries like retail, banking, and logistics, thereby safeguarding assets and preventing potential threats.”
Mr Sharma also noted the vast opportunities AI brings for the future of private security. He described AI as one of the most exciting technologies to emerge in the past several decades, with applications ranging from biometric authentication to advanced surveillance systems. “AI-driven biometric authentication and facial recognition systems can offer seamless, efficient, and secure access management for businesses, housing societies, and industrial facilities across the country,” he explained.
Additionally, Sharma discussed the role of AI in enhancing security with AI-powered CCTV systems that employ real-time video analytics to detect unusual activities. This technology is especially beneficial in high-risk areas such as malls, hospitals, and office complexes. Furthermore, AI-powered drones, thermal cameras, and motion sensors can significantly improve the monitoring of large facilities like factories, warehouses, and energy plants.
According to Sharma, AI presents private security firms with an opportunity to tackle long-standing challenges, improve operational efficiency, and build trust with clients. This, in turn, would foster sustainable growth and help companies remain competitive in an increasingly tech-driven market.
As the private security sector continues to evolve, the integration of AI promises to offer smarter, more effective security solutions, creating a safer environment for businesses and individuals alike.
