New Delhi: In a notable development, Nilabhra Sengupta (IRSSE: 1997), Chief Vigilance Officer (CVO) of Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Bengaluru, has been prematurely repatriated to his parent cadre, before completing even one year of his assigned three-year tenure.
The decision was formalized through an official order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on Monday, October 6, 2025.
Premature Exit: Less Than a Year Into Tenure
Sengupta had assumed charge as CVO of BEL on October 25, 2024, with a sanctioned tenure of three years. However, his repatriation comes just short of completing a year, marking an early end to his deputation.
The competent authority has approved his return with an extended ‘cooling-off’ period, which typically restricts immediate reappointment to central deputation roles. No official reason has been cited for the premature return in the DoPT notification.
Role of a CVO in PSUs
As Chief Vigilance Officer, Sengupta was responsible for overseeing vigilance functions and internal anti-corruption mechanisms within BEL, a strategically important defence public sector undertaking (PSU) under the Ministry of Defence.
The premature exit of a CVO is often closely watched due to the sensitive nature of the position, especially in defence PSUs where vigilance oversight plays a critical role in procurement and compliance.
