BEML & DRDO’s VRDE Sign Tech Transfer Deal to Boost Indian Army’s Mobility with Indigenous UMVs, URVs, and Tank Trailers

Licensing Agreements Pave the Way for Indigenous Production of Critical Support Vehicles for MBT Arjun and Tank Transporters
Indian Masterminds Stories

Bengaluru: In a major step toward strengthening India’s self-reliance in defence manufacturing, BEML Limited announced on Monday that it has signed three licensing agreements with the Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (VRDE), a premier lab under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

These agreements aim to facilitate the Transfer of Technology (ToT) to manufacture critical mobility and support systems for the Indian Army’s Armoured Corps, enhancing its operational efficiency and logistics support on the battlefield.

Indigenous Production of UMV, URV, and Tank Transport Trailer
Under the deal, Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) will indigenously develop and produce the following key platforms-

  • Unit Maintenance Vehicle (UMV) for MBT Arjun
  • Unit Repair Vehicle (URV) for MBT Arjun
  • Full Trailer for 70-Ton Tank Transporter, equipped with an Advanced Hydraulic Suspension System

These systems are vital for on-field maintenance, repair, and transportation of Main Battle Tanks like the Arjun, significantly boosting the mobility and sustainability of the Indian Army’s heavy armored units.

A Milestone for Aatmanirbhar Bharat in Defence
In its official release, BEML said the collaboration represents a significant milestone in India’s journey toward “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” (Self-Reliant India), particularly in the strategic defence sector.

“This marks a transformational move toward fully indigenous, next-generation solutions that meet the operational needs of our armed forces,” the company said.

The initiative is in line with the Government of India’s larger push to indigenise key defence technologies, reduce import dependency, and empower public sector defence enterprises to play a leading role in national security.

About the Partners
BEML Limited is a leading Indian PSU under the Ministry of Defence, with decades of experience in defence, aerospace, and heavy engineering.

VRDE, a DRDO lab, specialises in the design and development of mobility systems, vehicles, and support platforms for military applications.
