The initiative is expected to redefine water tourism in Madhya Pradesh, providing visitors with peaceful moments amidst nature while boosting the state’s tourism identity on the national stage.
“Launching the Shikara Boat service at Bada Talab, built nearly a thousand years ago in Bhopal, is a historic occasion,” said Chief Minister Dr. Yadav. “This initiative will bring the beauty of Dal Lake to the city of lakes and strengthen the state’s water tourism sector.”
Tourism and Cultural Experience
Tourists will enjoy –
- Food and beverages on the Shikaras
- Comfortable seating arrangements
- Opportunity to purchase indigenous handicrafts, organic products, and local textiles
- Bird watching and eco-tourism activities
Dr. Yadav also experienced a Shikara ride, sampling tea, poha, samosas, and fruits from the floating boat restaurant. Visitors also enjoyed scientific tourism activities, such as viewing the Sun through a telescope, arranged by the Regional Science Center, Bhopal.
Environmental Sustainability
The 20 Shikaras are constructed using fiber-reinforced polyurethane, a non-reactive, eco-friendly material, ensuring water purity and ecological safety. Built by an internationally renowned organization, these Shikaras are modeled after those popular in Kerala, Bengal, and Assam, incorporating pollution-free modern technology.

Boost to Local Economy and Employment
Assembly Speaker Mr. Narendra Singh Tomar emphasized that the Shikara service would enhance tourism and create local employment opportunities.
Haryana Assembly Speaker Mr. Harvinder Kalyan noted that Bhopal holds a unique position in India, and the sight of Shikaras sailing in Bada Talab is unforgettable. Other dignitaries, including MLAs and ministers, praised the initiative for bringing Kashmir’s Dal Lake experience to Madhya Pradesh.

Promoting Madhya Pradesh as a Water Tourism Hub
The Madhya Pradesh Tourism Department plans to further promote water sports and tourism activities across the state. By integrating cultural experiences, local cuisine, handicrafts, and eco-tourism, the Shikara service is expected to become a national and international tourism attraction.
